Job Overview
Police Staff National Firearms Instructor – responsible for delivering firearms training to authorised police officers across the West Midlands region, primarily at the Birmingham firing range and other designated training venues.
Eligibility
- Continuously resident in the UK for the past 5 years.
- Previously worked as a police firearms instructor within the last 3 years.
- Physically fit and capable of passing the police 15‑metre role‑related fitness test to AFO level 7:6.
Responsibilities
- Supervise practical exercises and provide constructive feedback to assist students in the learning process.
- Assess students on courses, report difficulties and progress, and maintain discipline and standards in the class.
- Design and structure lessons to meet course objectives.
- Prepare, write and deliver lesson plans to AFOs, incorporating required risk assessments and safety briefs.
- Use computers and associated equipment for the preparation and presentation of training material.
- Assist in the planning, timetabling and development of courses to meet the needs of the force.
- Assist with the evaluation of courses and any subsequent changes to course content.
- Identify training needs within the force with regard to firearms training.
- Maintain a thorough operational knowledge of legislation in respect of police use of firearms.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of police procedures and any relevant legislation in respect of police use of firearms.
- Provide information, advice and assistance, as required, in respect of police use of firearms.
- Review and evaluate weaponry and other firearms equipment.
- Participate in the general upkeep and maintenance of Park Lane Range and other training facilities, ensuring they are clean, safe and comply with Health and Safety requirements.
- In the absence of the Armourer, ensure all weaponry and ammunition stored in WMP facilities are correctly audited and stock levels are maintained.
- Carry out maintenance and repairs to all weaponry as required.
- Promote and comply with WMP's policies on health and safety, equality, diversity and data protection.
- Carry out such other duties which are consistent with the nature, responsibilities and grading of the post.
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential Knowledge & Experience
- Nationally trained Police Firearms Instructor (within last 3 years).
- Authorised Police Firearms Officer (within last 3 years).
- Sound knowledge of the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC).
- PTLLS level 3 qualification or equivalent.
- Knowledge of computers, especially Microsoft Office programmes.
- Capable of passing the NPCC fitness test (bleep test) to level 7.6 and the WMP vetting process.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to produce comprehensive written reports.
- Must be a current, accredited teaching qualification (e.g., A1, TAQA, IOSH/NEBOSH).
- Pre‑training knowledge of JML Chronicle Firearms Training and Armoury systems.
- Basic police driving skills.
- Desirable Knowledge & Experience
- Assessment qualifications (A1 or TAQA).
- Accredited teaching or training qualifications.
- Experience with nerve of firearms systems and weapons.
- Additional safety/health qualifications.
Work Schedule and Location
- Hours of Work: 36.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 07:30 – 15:30.
- Location: Range Complex, Park Lane, B5 6DDV.
Vetting and Medical Checks
- Successful applicants will pass Management Vetting and Counter‑Terrorism Clearance scrutiny, including full background and financial disclosure.
- Applicants will undergo a medical assessment, which may include a drug or hearing test.
