Overview

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Superintendent Sonographer in Gynaecology. The post holder will be regarded as a senior specialist sonographer in Gynaecology and a key member of the highly specialised Consultant led team. The post holder will have extended skills and possess the ability to scan and report autonomously in the specific field of Gynaecology. They will demonstrate specialised knowledge and expertise to support service delivery and play a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the service.

The postholder will be a Gynaecology clinical specialist who has undergone specialised training in the modality and is expected to operate independently within a defined scope of practice. The post-holder will also perform and issue reports pertaining to the field of Gynaecology, work as part of the multidisciplinary team, and liaise with associated services. They will be experienced in cross-sectional image interpretation and apply this to clinical prioritisation and decision making. They will work towards obtaining expertise in the four pillars of advanced practice.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a high-quality standard of patient care and provide an excellent experience for patients.
  • Independently undertake ultrasound examinations using a high level of specialist knowledge in line with local, regional and national guidance.
  • Be responsible for the development and management of the specialist service, ensuring optimal resource use and facilities.
  • Provide professional leadership and development (including training) of the wider team.
  • Develop and improve professional expertise via continuous professional development.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and compliance with CQC standards and specialist reporting guidance.
  • Participate in the vetting and prioritisation of ultrasound examinations according to departmental and national guidelines.
  • Optimise service delivery and utilisation of ultrasound lists.
  • Provide a service across multiple locations as per service needs; define daily work programmes/scheduling of imaging.
  • Train, teach and supervise trainees, qualified junior staff and assistants in service delivery and their individual needs.
  • Lead the development of service expansion and manage space, equipment and staffing requirements.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, explaining procedures and obtaining consent where necessary.
  • Encourage the development of, and provide expert assistance to, more junior sonographers; act as a role model and supervise radiological registrars and organise educational experiences for students.
  • Participate in clinical audit and foster an audit culture; lead development and innovation in new clinical practices and technology.
  • Assist and manage workflows with data inputs for patient records and governance, ensuring information governance and data protection compliance.
  • Participate in department governance including risk management and health and safety.
  • Ensure all equipment is cleaned and maintained; review maintenance of key equipment relevant to the role.
  • Undertake training and education for sonographers, nurse sonographers to degree level, and junior doctors in ultrasound scanning per RCOG competencies in Gynaecology, including early pregnancy.
  • Act as a clinical specialist role model to promote engagement with stakeholders and CPD activities; provide line management to trainee sonographers.
  • Work across sites (e.g., University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire facilities and Community Diagnostics Hub) to ensure consistent service quality and standardisation per RCOG and RCR requirements.
  • Participate in governance, risk management and information governance, ensuring data integrity and statistical evaluation where applicable.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Specialised training and demonstrated expertise in Gynaecology ultrasound; ability to scan and report autonomously within a defined scope of practice.
  • Experience in cross-sectional image interpretation and clinical decision making.
  • Immunisation/vaccination reporting required (from a UK occupational health provider or UK GP).
  • Ability to lead and develop the service, with a track record of professional leadership and teaching of staff and trainees.

  • Willingness to work across multiple locations and adapt to service needs.
