About the role

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to join our national law firm's Employment & HR team at our Cardiff head office. This is an ideal opportunity for a recent law graduate or someone looking for their first legal role within a law firm.

You’ll gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced legal environment, supporting experienced fee earners, on a wide variety of employment law matters. This role provides a strong foundation for those seeking a career in law and looking to progress toward a training contract.

About the team

Our Employment & HR team delivers commercially focused, strategic support across the full spectrum of workplace and people management issues. We advise a broad client base, including listed companies, private businesses, public bodies, and senior executives, on matters ranging from employee relations and disputes to workforce strategy and executive arrangements.

Our national team of experienced practitioners provides clear, pragmatic guidance tailored to our clients’ commercial objectives and workplace culture. In addition to legal advice, we offer HR audits, in-house training, and coaching to enhance compliance, leadership, and HR capability.

Key responsibilities
Document Management
  • Obtain employment-related documents (e.g., contracts, policies, tribunal documents) in accordance with fee earner (FE) instructions.
  • Manage team mailboxes, log correspondence from ACAS, employment tribunals, and opposing parties, and track deadlines and key dates.
  • Assist with scanning, electronic filing, and archiving of documentation, ensuring accurate and accessible case files.
Client Onboarding & Matter Opening Support
  • Assist with pre-opening checklists and ensure all compliance and risk checks are completed prior to file opening.
  • Prepare and issue standardised client care and engagement documents under supervision.
  • Track new client/matter openings and ensure all required KYC and onboarding documentation is received and properly filed.
Employment Tribunal, Case Preparation & Support
  • Assist with the preparation of bundles and documentation for employment tribunals and hearings.
  • Liaise with clients to obtain relevant background information and documentation for ongoing matters.
  • Draft and format standard letters, schedules of loss, and basic witness statement templates for fee earner review.
Post-Completion & Compliance Support
  • Organise and manage storage of original signed contracts, settlement agreements, and tribunal orders.
  • Track and follow up on outstanding undertakings, settlement payments, or tribunal directions.
  • Assist with ensuring accurate time recording and compliance with internal quality procedures.
General Administrative Support
  • Support the collation and organisation of case documents, including for disclosure or data room purposes.
  • Maintain and update the department’s precedent and template document database.
  • Assist with conflict checks and completion of risk assessment documentation.
  • Prepare files for closure and support the archiving process in line with firm policies.
  • Assist with logging of incoming payments (e.g., settlement funds) and help set up payment instructions as required.
About You
Essential Skills and Attributes
  • A law degree or equivalent qualification (or studying toward one).
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work effectively in a busy team environment.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Desirable
  • Previous experience in a legal or administrative role (e.g., internship, placement, or paralegal support).
  • An interest in pursuing a legal career, including a future training contract.
