The IPP team of the ICube laboratory at Strasbourg's civil hospital is offering a 5/6-month internship (starting February 2026) on the theme of "Biomedical Optics".
Background: Obesity and its complication type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), whose prevalence continues to rise worldwide, are associated with exacerbated bone fragility and elevated fracture risk. Obesity and T2DM are also often associated with normal or increased bone mineral density (bone mass), suggesting that bone fragility is due to alterations in bone quality in obese/T2DM subjects. Chronic hyperglycemia can induce the formation and accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) capable of altering bone collagen mineralization and structure, and reducing bone strength. Characterization of alterations in bone quality and structure is necessary to better assess the risk of fragility fractures associated with obesity and T2DM. In this project, researchers at ICube (Strasbourg) and MABLab (Boulogne-sur-Mer/Lille) groups have proposed a multi-scale study of bone quality in the context of fragility associated with obesity and T2DM.
Objective and methodologies: This Master 2 internship aims to analyze the relationship between bone mechanical properties and bone matrix structure in samples from obese and diabetic mice. Therefore, tibias and femurs isolated from mice made obese or diabetic in the MABLab laboratory will be used. The candidate will take part in Raman spectroscopy analyses on tibia samples. He/she will be responsible for analyzing the spectral database that will be generated in order to develop a prototype portable Raman spectrometer based on a fiber-optic probe-needle.
Candidate profile: Engineering student or Master 2 in Biology-Health/Health Engineering or equivalent, with initial laboratory internship experience. Motivated, the student will have skills in microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, ideally in Raman, and an interest in handling murine biological samples.
The internship location is at the ICube laboratory in Strasbourg, in collaboration with the MABLab laboratory in Boulogne-sur-Mer and Lille.
