The Faculty of Law is one of the oldest professional faculties at the University of Toronto. Today, it is one of the world's great law schools. The Faculty's rich academic programs are complemented by its many legal clinics and public interest programs. The Faculty of Law is housed in the elegant, state-of-the-art Jackman Law Building, alongside two historic buildings, Flavelle House and Falconer Hall, on the St. George Campus in downtown Toronto.

Your opportunity:

Under the direction of the Director, Career Development Programs, the Career Development Advisor will advise students on their own process of legal career development by providing options and consequences based on your own lived experiences within and/or knowledge of the legal profession. The incumbent will utilize self assessment exercises, vocational assessments, non-directive and other career counselling techniques while counselling students on legal career-related matters.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying self assessment exercises, vocational assessments, non-directive and other career counselling techniques
  • Counselling students on career-related matters by discussing options and consequences while incorporating personal circumstances and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Advising students on career development process
  • Advising students through their own process of career development by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Advising students on job search, industry research and networking strategies including cover letter, resume and interview preparation
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Identifying, fostering and maintaining relationships with potential and existing employers
  • Developing content for instructional workshops

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Juris Doctor degree is a definite asset.
  • Minimum five years experience in the professional development, recruitment, career counselling and/or mentorship of legal professionals or law students
  • Experience in resume review, job search skills, interview preparation, mock interviews, networking, professional workplace behaviour skills, and career event preparation
  • Experience with recruitment and outreach to potential legal employers
  • Demonstrated experience in working with students and graduates who are pursuing diverse legal career paths
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with the planning, development, coordination and implementation of career development and recruitment programs, career-related workshops, and special events
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of the legal community/profession and related Canadian and American recruiting practices/procedures and hiring needs
  • A strong understanding of the changing legal marketplace and trends in legal employment
  • Excellent knowledge of opportunities for law graduates in Canada and abroad
  • Solid understanding of career opportunities for summer law students and articling students
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with stakeholders at all levels (students, staff, faculty, administrators, and external constituencies including alumni and members of the legal profession).
  • Highly developed organizational skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously; demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and to exercise discretion with sensitive and confidential material
  • Superior presentation, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong computer skills including excellent knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) as well as database administration.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability using the Internet as a search tool, updating websites and working with web-based software.

  • Familiarity and/or direct working experience in a legal setting highly valued
