Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.
We are currently seeking a Cataloguing and Technical Services Librarian to join our Library & Archives team. Under the direction of the Rosamond Ivey Special Collections Archivist and Manager, Library & Archives, the incumbent will support the AGO’s Mission of Art + Audience + Learning, and upholds principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility and Anti-Racism, by ensuring library collection is discoverable, accessible and appropriately stored. They will serve as the principal cataloguer for library collections and administers library technical services activities; leads collections management projects.
The rate of pay for this position is $77,932 - $97,388 per annum.
What is this position responsible for?
- Serves as principal cataloguer for library collections; interprets international cataloguing standards and local policies for staff and volunteer cataloguers. Performs original and derived cataloguing, description and classification of all library materials in all formats and media; applies external rules and standards, including MARC21, RDA, AACR2, LCSH, Dewey Decimal and other relevant standards, to ensure that library holdings meet international standards for electronic access.
- Resolves complex cataloguing and name authority problems, including maintenance of bibliographic database records, making changes, additions, deletions, and merges in the bibliographic and authority files as necessary.
- Establishes local policies and standards for bibliographic records created in library online catalogue; establishes cataloguing procedures; establishes and maintains authorized forms of names and indexing vocabulary. Trains staff and volunteers in use and application of Horizon cataloguing template, LCSH, DDC, MARC formats, AACR2+, authorities and external bibliographic utilities.
- Oversees the physical processing of accessioned library collection objects, including the marking and housing of library materials in all formats and media; oversees book storage and preservation activities according to Library & Archives preservation management standards.
What are we looking for?
- MLS or Library and Information Technician diploma; or the equivalent in education and experience; undergraduate studies in art, art history or related discipline.
- Bibliographic knowledge of French; familiarity with other European languages an asset.
- Several years of progressive cataloguing experience in an academic or museum library; experience with multiple formats and with rare book cataloguing is an asset.
- Experience in library technical services operations
- Demonstrated knowledge of cataloguing standards and principles such as MARC21, RDA, LCSH, AACR2+, authority control practices, and descriptive vocabularies and thesauri related to the arts and humanities
- Demonstrated knowledge of automated cataloguing systems (e.g. OCLC Connexion) and professional trends in cataloguing.
- Demonstrated knowledge of book structure and preservation requirements; knowledge of techniques and materials for construction of protective wrappers for rare books; knowledge of materials and techniques for finishing procedures.
- Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills, creative problem-solving skills including the ability to contribute to policy, prioritize and manage workflow
- Demonstrated communication skills: written, verbal and consultation.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize and interpret information.
- Demonstrated ability to search the Internet for authoritative information.
- Experience using Horizon ILS preferable
