Job description

My client is a leading environmental consultancy working with Indigenous communities to advance rights, interests, and sustainable land stewardship. They provide strategic guidance and technical expertise in areas such as environmental assessment, land use planning, Indigenous Knowledge studies, resource management, and economic development.

This role is ideal for someone who is motivated by outcomes and committed to supporting Indigenous communities in achieving their lands and resource goals.

Remote / WFH / Hybrid: 100% Remote from anywhere in Canada.

Travel: On average 3 - 5 days per month, mostly to northern BC and ON.

Salary:$80k - $115k DOE, plus health benefits, RRSP matching (The final salary will reflect the qualifications, relevant experience, expertise, and professional designations that each candidate brings to the role. Individuals who offer additional strengths or bring exceptional value to the team will be considered for compensation beyond the stated range, as our client recognizes and rewards unique contributions.)

In this role, you will be accountable for:

  • Building and maintaining long-term client relationships:
    • Develop a clear understanding of each client’s priorities and achieve client satisfaction.
    • Expand services with existing clients by proactively identifying opportunities for additional support.
  • Delivering high-quality project outcomes on schedule and budget:
    • Lead 3–5 active lands and resources projects at any time, ensuring 100% on-time deliverables.
    • Ensure all projects meet or exceed agreed scope, achieving zero missed regulatory or funding deadlines.
  • Strengthening community and Council engagement:
    • Facilitate effective consultation and engagement processes with Indigenous communities, ensuring participation levels and outcomes meet community expectations.
    • Document and communicate engagement outcomes to leadership in a timely manner (e.g., monthly reports or as required).
  • Enhancing land rights and development opportunities:
    • Provide actionable strategic advice on Duty to Consult, economic development, and land management that results in tangible improvements in clients’ land-use planning and regulatory positions.
    • Support communities in successfully negotiating impact benefit agreements and other partnerships.
  • Managing referrals and regulatory processes:
    • Oversee the referral response process, ensuring all responses meet regulatory standards and reflect community priorities.
    • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of lands data (geographic information, templates, protocols) for client offices.
  • Driving business development and growth:
    • Lead or support proposal development to secure new projects, with measurable year-over-year growth in revenue.
    • Build strategic relationships with federal, provincial, and municipal agencies, industry proponents, and other advisors to expand opportunities for clients.
Key Deliverables:
  • Deliver major projects on time and within budget, meeting all client and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish or strengthen strategic partnerships with key stakeholders (government, industry, NGOs, or community partners).
  • Facilitate successful funding applications to advance client lands and resources initiatives.
  • Demonstrate measurable improvement in client community capacity through documented training, engagement, or process improvements.
Qualifications for Success:
  • Degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years’ experience managing lands and resources, environmental, economic development, or regulatory projects, preferably with Indigenous communities.
  • Strong knowledge of land management legislation (e.g., Indian Act, Impact Assessment Act, Duty to Consult obligations) and environmental best practices.
  • Proven experience facilitating engagement processes and developing community plans and policies.
  • Excellent project management, technical writing, and analytical skills.
  • Experience with funding applications, budgets, and client reporting.
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to build trust with diverse communities.
Assets:
  • Experience with GIS, traditional knowledge/land use studies, or community economic development.
  • Additional language skills (French, Cree, Ojibway, or others).
  • Consulting experience in fast-paced, multi-project environments.
