A justice organization for Indigenous communities in Surrey is seeking a Staff Lawyer for child protection and criminal defense cases. The ideal candidate will represent Indigenous clients, advocating for their rights within the child welfare and criminal justice systems. This full-time role offers a hybrid work arrangement, an extended benefits package, and a competitive salary ranging from $90,000 to $150,000 depending on experience.
Staff Lawyer (Child Protection) - Surrey IJC
Empowered by the First Nations Leadership Council and in partnership with the provincial and federal governments, the BC First Nations Justice Council (BCFNJC) serves 204 First Nations in BC. Our mandate is to reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and to support Nations as they move toward sovereignty over justice. Position Summary
The staff lawyer at the Indigenous Justice Centre (IJC) will use their legal skills to represent Indigenous clients involved in MCFD (child welfare) proceedings. A secondary focus will be to represent Indigenous clients facing criminal charges, with the overarching goal of reducing Indigenous incarceration in federal and provincial corrections.
As legal counsel, you will be part of a team that works to ensure Indigenous persons who face the MCFD and Criminal Justice systems do not fall through the cracks. You will work with Indigenous clients to help them access legal supports and other social supports that affect housing, employment, physical and mental health and wellness, necessary to address challenges in child protection and the criminal justice systems.
Reporting: Provincial Director of the Indigenous Justice Centres
Location: Surrey, BC (option for 75% in-office minimum hybrid work arrangement available)
Benefits: Extended benefits package that includes health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP / TFSA savings plans
Pay Range: $90,000 - $150,000 - salary will be commensurate with education and experience
Hours: Full-time (35 hours / week); Mondays to Fridays
