Job description

Petroplan is pleased to be working alongside a reputable independent power producer (IPP) specializing in the renewable energy sector based in Cape Town.

The Wind Project Engineer manages, on behalf of the IPP, all the multi-disciplinary engineering aspects of wind projects during the transaction and execution phases.

Responsibilities:
  1. Manage and coordinate the inputs and support of the IPP's multi-disciplinary project engineering team, including various engineering discipline specialists/leads.
  2. Participate in technical and commercial evaluation and negotiations with EPC Contractors, TSA Contractors, and O&M Contractors.
  3. Manage and coordinate the LTA's technical due diligence.
  4. Liaise, on behalf of the IPP, with Eskom for grid connection self-build works, including managing the Eskom approval processes in collaboration with the EPC Contractor.
  5. Coordinate the compilation of Employer's performance-based technical specifications and Employer's Requirements.
  6. Prepare RFP/RFQ documents (drawings, specifications, returnable documents) for EPC and O&M Contractors.
  7. Coordinate technical reviews of the EPC and TSA Contractor's AFC design reports and drawings.
  8. Ensure that the designs and installations by EPC and TSA Contractors meet client requirements and safety regulations.
  9. Oversee the Contractor's Grid Code Compliance design and process.
  10. Manage project technical queries, including design interface management between TSA and BoP Contractors.
  11. Conduct regular site visits (minimum bi-weekly) to review contractor performance.
  12. Participate in project progress meetings.
  13. Coordinate the IPP's monthly progress reports.
  14. Review, with Quality, Construction, and Site Supervisors, the Contractor's QA/QC processes.
  15. Provide technical support to Project Managers, Construction Managers, Site Supervisors, Quality Managers, and Commissioning Managers during site construction and commissioning.
  16. Assist Construction and Project Managers in certifying completion for Contractor's milestone payments.
  17. Ensure ongoing technical compliance of wind projects with PPA, SBA, BQ, DCUOSA, and other project documents.
  18. The primary responsibility of the Wind Project Engineer is to contribute to the successful execution of wind projects, achieving financial close, and executing projects to reach COD and Facility Acceptance within budget and timelines.
Minimum Educational Qualifications:
  • BSc Engineering or National Diploma (NDip) Engineering (Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical)
  • Pr Eng, Pr Tech, or equivalent chartered engineer qualification
Minimum Previous Experience:
  • 15 years' experience in major engineering infrastructure projects
  • 5 years' experience in renewable generation projects
  • 3 years' experience in wind farm projects
  • 5 years' engineering design experience
  • 2 years' construction or site supervision experience
Essential Skills:
  • Proficiency in electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering with basic knowledge of other disciplines
  • Project and Engineering Management
  • AutoCAD proficiency
  • Microsoft Office literacy
  • Basic knowledge of Eskom distribution and transmission systems
Other Advantageous Skills:
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction contracts
  • H&S experience and training
Languages:
  • English (reading, writing, speaking)
