Overview
Technical Manager / Workshop Manager required for our Client, a leader in Africa’s abnormal load logistics and heavy lifting solutions at the premises in Kliprivier, Midvaal. We are seeking a seasoned Technical Manager to take charge of our Client’s fully equipped workshop. The fleet consists of abnormal trucks, SPMT trailers, crawler cranes, mobile cranes and other light-duty vehicles. Our Client needs a dynamic leader to ensure all assets are operational, compliant and maintained to the highest standard, ensuring readiness for new projects at all times.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a technical team of around 10 personnel members, including qualified diesel mechanics, riggers, administration staff, yard assistants and drivers, and oversee all maintenance, servicing, inspections, repairs and fleet compliance for: Abnormal trucks and trailers; SPMT / SPT trailers (self-propelled modular transportation); Mobile cranes; Crawler cranes; Light-duty vehicles; Heavy duty hydraulic jacks; Escort vehicles.
- Daily management of workshop operations, planning and resource allocation.
- Budgeting, controlling workshop expenses, breakdown / emergency expenses.
- Full administrative function of managing the mechanical workshop and the Client’s fleet.
- Ensure preventative maintenance, breakdown repair and roadworthiness compliance across all fleet categories.
- Management of job cards, part usage, service records and reporting systems.
- Ensure workshop SHEQ compliance and enforce safety protocols.
- Supervise and support technical teams to deliver high-quality, efficient service.
- Maintain critical spare parts inventory and liaise with suppliers.
- Support remote breakdowns, on-site maintenance and cross-site workshop coordination.
- Coordinate team of Mechanics to attend to services and breakdowns on scheduled maintenance and unplanned maintenance.
- Coordinate inspections, licensing and audits (internal and external).
- Contribute to monthly fleet reports and improvement strategies.
Requirements
- 7 to 10 years’ experience in a similar role within heavy-duty transport, crane rental or construction plant environments.
- Trade-test Diesel Mechanic or equivalent technical qualification preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of hydraulics, rigging, lifting equipment and trailer systems.
- Excellent planning, workshop scheduling and team leadership skills.
- Firm grasp of safety, compliance and quality standards in transport.
- High energy, problem-solving mindset and ability to lead under pressure.
- Proficient in MS Excel and digital workshop / job card systems.
- Physically fit, hands-on and willing to work extended hours when needed.
- Attend to emergency breakdowns after hours as and when required.
