Qualifications

Job description

News24 is looking for a digitally savvy sub-editor to join our Business team from 1 January 2026.

This person will sub-edit fast copy flow, focusing on headlines, quality and accuracy of content. This position is based in Cape Town or Johannesburg and will be a mid-shift (12:00 to 20:00).

Minimum requirements

• Relevant degree/diploma in e.g. languages, media studies or journalism;
• At least 5-10 years’ experience in a sub-editing role in a news environment, preferably digital;
• Proven competence in the fluent use of English;
• Excellent general knowledge;
• A good understanding of local and international financial news and the political economy;
• A passion for breaking news;
• A strong ability to check figures and ensure those figures correspond to the context of a story;
• Comfort subbing text on graphics;
• Sound knowledge of editorial principles and journalism ethics;
• Knowledge of media law and best practice, as well as the Press Code.

Duties and responsibilities

• Ensure quality of the final product is of the highest standard, consistent with the brand and style of News24;
• Copy-editing, headline writing and revise editing;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, over some weekends and on some public holidays on a roster system;
• Has to work well with reporters to provide constant feedback.
