JOB TITLE: SAFETY SPECIALIST – CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA.
We are seeking a Safety Specialist, to join our Field Services Teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing an administrative, technical and training service in respect of safety procedures, standards and safe working practices. Monitor environmental issues and compile action plans for any deviations identified. Inform management of all legal requirements. As well as conduct audits to ensure compliance with safety standards.
In this position, you will report to Field Service Manager – Bulk Hub, Southern Africa.
This position is mainly located in Cape Town, South Africa.
TEAM YOU’LL BELONG TO
You will join the Field Services Team and work closely with internal and external stakeholders, such as Management, Metso Staff, Suppliers and Sub-Contractors, Clients and Site Staff.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Promote a safety culture with a zero mindset in which safety is the prime concern and will never be compromised
- Promote the involvement of all employees in improving safety
- Implementation of the site safety management plan
- Conduct full safety audits to evaluate compliance with safety management plans and systems as per the audit/inspection schedule
- Reporting of SHE matters and performance to the SHE Manager
- Liaise with Client Line and Safety management to ensure full understanding and communication of all safety issues impacting on Client from Metso Minerals activities and vice versa
- Ensure appropriate Metso Minerals personnel are involved in local dept SHE Committees
- Participate in safety meetings to understand site specific requirements
- Participate in a pre-start safety review with the Client’s Management to facilitate a “bridging document” to remove any uncertainty/differences between these Rules and the Client’s SMP
- Co-ordinate the preparation of Emergency Response Plans on specific sites as required
- Identify hazards and risks through analysis and inspection, including personnel, plant and environment
- Focus on the elimination of unsafe acts, and rectify unsafe conditions quickly
- Conduct workplace inspections
- Perform safety training such as LTI’s, Risk Assessments and Safety Walk-Abouts
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inspections
- Perform detailed inspections at all sites in his area of responsibility
- When possible the following appointed persons must be part of the inspection team. 2.6.1, 2.17.1, 2.6.2 and Safety
- Keep record of these inspections and all deviations from standards must be reported
- Deviations from previous visits must be checked to ensure corrective action have been taken
- Whenever a life-threatening act or condition exists, stop the work and rectify immediately
Training
- Perform necessary safety related training on sites and office-based training for new employees as well as refresher training for all existing employees
- Responsible for keeping detailed records of the following: Hours and shifts worked, LTI Reportable accidents and personal records of all staff on sites
- All accident/incident investigations and all documentation pertaining to the Site safety program including safety officer daily inspections
Auditing
- Perform audits to measure site specifics requirements
Confidential Information
- Design information associated with proprietary equipment as well as profit margins and similar commercial information
- No information regarding accidents or statistics may be shared with the media without the approval of Management
Reports
- Compile month end report and include the following: number of shifts worked, total hours worked, number of LTIs and High Potential Incidents as per SHE Manager format
General
- The responsibility of this position encompasses all aspects of safety associated with materials handling bulk equipment, site construction and erection and commissioning etc… and requires a thorough knowledge of all aspects of safety and the site safety program
WHO YOU ARE
- Matric (Grade 12)
- Familiar with the Health and Safety Mining Act as well as The Health and Safety Construction Act
- NADSAM or SAMTREK / Safety Officer certificate (COMSOC II)
- Familiar with the process of Inspections and Audits
- Legal liability
- Hazard identification
- 2 Years construction/plant safety experience
- Valid driversLicense
WHAT SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS (HARD AND SOFT) ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ROLE?
- Technical Background regarding Bulk Material Handling
- Bulk Material Handling equipment and customer relationships
- Communicator - Handle customer needs & customer complaints
- Handle stress in breakdown situations.
- Plan & use own initiative
- Willingness / Ability to travel locally and internationally for Site specific work
- Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 kg
- Specific vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Use of keyboards, telephones, copiers, telefax, visits and movement through shops, and travel experiences
- Climbing of stairs, ladders, scaffolds at jobsites and customer facilities
- Harsh environmental conditions due to dust, heat, wind and rain
- Must be medically fit to perform site specific duties
