Overview
Qualified Blood Bank Technician to perform routine testing functions (manual and automated) in Blood Banks, including compatibility, post‑natal and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations according to SOP and Standards of Practice for Blood Transfusion in South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform all operational functions (manual and automated) according to SOP and within required timeframes.
- Check blood and blood product stock levels; report expired units.
- Receive reagents and proficiency tests, store at correct temperature.
- Dispose of waste according to SOP; maintain waste traceability documentation.
- Daily cleaning of work area, cold rooms, fridges and freezers; record information.
- Check equipment and instrumentation is in working order; report defects to Supervisor.
- Monitor temperature of all equipment used to store blood and products; record information.
- Verify test results performed by registered technicians, trainee technicians and student technologists.
- Perform secondary testing (problem cross matches, postnatal, antibody investigations, preliminary transfusion reaction investigations) within required timeframes and according to SOP specifications.
- Assist Supervisor with training and competency assessments; contribute to continuous quality improvement.
- Document customer complaints/compliments/queries; interact professionally with internal and external customers.
- Perform shift supervisor functions and miscellaneous routine laboratory tasks as required.
Qualifications
- HPCSA Registered Biomedical Technician or Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
- Experience and knowledge as per HPCSA registration requirements.
- Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Clear understanding of relevant legislation and company procedures.
- Proficient eye‑sight; not colour‑blind.

- Shift work, weekend duties as scheduled.
- Overtime as required.
- Occasional local and national travel.
- General physical health and reasonable endurance and mobility.
