The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing and optimizing all operational activities within the wood pallet manufacturing facility.
This includes production, quality control, maintenance, health and safety, logistics coordination, and staff management to ensure efficient, cost-effective, and compliant operations while meeting customer demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and manage daily manufacturing operations to meet production targets and delivery schedules.
- Ensure optimal use of raw materials (timber), machinery, and labour.
- Monitor production output, efficiency, waste, and downtime; implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee pallet manufacturing processes including cutting, assembly, heat treatment (ISPM 15), and repairs.
- Ensure compliance with ISPM 15 regulations for heat-treated pallets where applicable.
Quality Control
- Ensure pallets meet customer specifications, industry standards, and internal quality requirements.
- Implement and maintain quality control procedures and corrective actions.
- Manage inspections and handle non-conformance issues.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and company safety policies.
- Maintain a safe working environment through regular risk assessments, toolbox talks and incident investigations.
- Oversee environmental compliance related to waste wood, sawdust, and recycling practices.
Maintenance & Asset Management
- Oversee preventative and corrective maintenance of machinery and equipment.
- Ensure minimal downtime through effective maintenance planning and spare parts management.
- Manage plant and equipment assets responsibly.
Staff Management & Leadership
- Lead, supervise, and develop production supervisors, machine operators, and general workers.
- Manage staff performance, attendance, discipline, and training in line with labour legislation.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Minimum Requirements
- Qualifications
- Matric
- Relevant technical or manufacturing qualifications will be beneficial.
Experience
- Minimum 8 to 10 years' experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in wood processing, pallet manufacturing, or related industries.
- Proven experience in managing production teams and factory operations.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and production planning.
- Knowledge of South African labour legislation and OHSA requirements.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Computer literacy (MS Excel, production reporting systems).
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage a dynamic work environment and meet deadlines under pressure.

Working Conditions
