A global mining company in Johannesburg is looking for a dynamic Learning & Development Manager to lead training initiatives across multiple operations in Africa and the Middle East. This role involves developing a comprehensive L&D strategy aligned with corporate goals, enhancing safety performance, and ensuring effective transfer of skills. Barrick Gold Investments is seeking a dynamic Learning & Development (L&D) Manager to lead the regional training function across multiple mining operations in the AME region.
The successful candidate will drive capability building, safety performance, and workforce growth.
The incumbent reports to the AME HR leadership and partners with regional and site-based HR and operational leaders to deliver a world-class, standardised, results-driven L&D function.
Develop and implement a comprehensive AME Learning & Development strategy aligned with Barrick's global goals and the regional people plan.
Establish standardised training departments and structures across all operations, integrating site-level training resources under a cohesive regional framework.
Lead the regional rollout of Damstra as the Learning Management System (LMS) and maintain training data, certifications, and competency records.
Overhaul and standardise induction programs across all sites to ensure consistent, engaging, safety-focused onboarding for employees and contractors.
Strengthen safety training, emphasizing competency assessment and the application of real-world lessons to promote a Zero Harm culture.
Partner with Barrick Academy and external providers to design leadership development and soft-skills programs focused on local talent.
Baseline and evaluate all training staff, identify gaps, and implement development plans.
Drive the localisation strategy, tracking expatriate-to-local skills transfer and developing competency-based career progression pathways.
Manage regional training budgets, track, analyse, and report on learning effectiveness and workforce development outcomes.
Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, HR or related field.
Ideally a tertiary qualification in Learning & Development.
Minimum 10 years of experience in learning & development, with at least 5 years in a management capacity within the mining sector.
Proven leadership of learning initiatives in developing countries or multi-site operations.
Experience implementing competency-based training frameworks and learning systems (e.g., Damstra, SAP SuccessFactors, Cornerstone).
Deep understanding of safety-critical training and compliance frameworks.
Strong financial and reporting acumen – budget management, ROI on training.
Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and leadership skills.
Operational experience in Civil, Construction or Mining industry.
Postgraduate qualification or professional certification in Learning & Development or Organisational Psychology.
Exposure to localisation, nationalisation or workforce transformation initiatives.
