Qualifications

Minimum of 1 year experience working in an academic library (intern or employed)

Responsibilities
  • Academic Support
    • Source articles for academic personnel from the EBSCO Discovery Service to enhance study material and course development.
    • Assist students and academics with queries relating to the e-library on MyNGI.
    • Give individual, step-by-step assistance to students to find suitable information on specific topics.
    • Assist students with referencing to support their academic writing.
  • General Support
    • Answer any general research-/library-related questions from students and academic staff.
    • Issue and receive books from students and academic staff on the EMC library system.
    • Assist students and academic staff with printing.
    • Assist students and academic staff in locating available textbooks on the EMC library system.
    • Assist students and academic staff in locating available textbooks on the library shelves.
  • Administrative duties
    • Shelving and organising of information centre books
    • Conduct regular shelf reading to ensure that books are in the correct order.
    • Handle payment of fines for overdue books
    • Follow-up on overdue books once a week
    • Report long overdue books to the Chief Information Specialist for invoicing once a week.
    • Put up posters and other informative material.
  • Managing of library stock
    • Perform triannual library audits on EMC
    • Remove old and redundant stock from the library shelves after the audit.
    • Change the status of material on EMC after the weeding process.
    • Compile a report of unrecoverable textbooks after the audit
  • Training
    • Conduct library orientation and induction training during the orientation week
    • Conduct training during orientation week on specific topics outlined by the VPAO and Chief Information Services Specialist.
    • Conduct ongoing training in the use of the EBSCO Discovery Service
Skills and Competencies
  • At least a National Diploma in Information Science or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in an academic library (intern or employed)
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Competent computer skills, e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and skills in information organisation, retrieval and dissemination
  • Ability to teach students and teachers on the operation of academic databases
  • Knowledge of referencing and intellectual integrity requirements
