Overview

Red Ember Recruitment is seeking a proactive and experienced HR Generalist to join our client's team. The successful candidate will take the lead in core HR functions with a strong focus on end-to-end recruitment, training and development, industrial relations, Employment Equity and MERSETA-related processes. This role is integral in driving talent acquisition, employee development and ensuring compliance with South African labour legislation and skills development frameworks.

Responsibilities
Recruitment & Talent Acquisition (35%)
  • Manage the full recruitment lifecycle: sourcing, screening, interviewing, selection and onboarding.
  • Collaborate with hiring managers to define role requirements and develop effective sourcing strategies.
  • Maintain and optimise the applicant tracking system (ATS).
  • Drive employer branding initiatives to attract high-quality candidates.
  • Monitor recruitment metrics and provide regular reports and insights.
Training & Development (25%)
  • Conduct training needs analysis across departments.
  • Design, implement and evaluate training programs aligned with business goals.
  • Coordinate internal and external training sessions, workshops and e‑learning.
  • Track employee development plans and career progression.
  • Ensure compliance with skills development legislation and reporting requirements.
  • Manage the full cycle of apprenticeship programme.
MERSETA Processes & Grant Management (15%)
  • Manage all MERSETA-related activities including registration, accreditation and reporting.
  • Prepare and submit grant claims including mandatory and discretionary grants.
  • Liaise with MERSETA and other SETAs to ensure compliance and maximise funding opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records of training interventions and learner achievements.
  • Stay updated on changes in SETA regulations and funding windows.
Employment Equity (15%)
  • Develop, implement and monitor the company's Employment Equity Plan in line with legislative requirements.
  • Coordinate and facilitate EE Committee meetings ensuring active participation and compliance.
  • Compile and submit EE reports to the Department of Employment and Labour.
  • Advise management on EE targets, progress and corrective actions.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion initiatives across the organisation.
General HR Support (10%)
  • Employee relations oversight, performance management and HR policy review and implementation.
  • Support payroll and benefits administration in collaboration with the finance team.
  • Maintain employee records and ensure data accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Contribute to HR projects and initiatives that enhance employee engagement and organisational culture.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Industrial Psychology or related field.
  • Minimum 3‑5 years of HR generalist experience with a strong focus on recruitment, training and EE.
  • Proven experience working with MERSETA or other SETAs including grant submissions.
  • Solid understanding of South African labour legislation, EE Act and Skills Development Act.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organisational skills.
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
