An international Mining House is seeking an experienced Chief Geologist to lead geological operations for a multi‑mineral mining project in Malawi. This role is pivotal in shaping exploration strategy, ensuring accurate resource modelling, and supporting sustainable mine development. The portfolio includes Phosphates (Apatite), Bauxite, Kaolinitic clays, Coal, Kyanite, Limestone, Rare Earth Elements (Strontianite, Monazite), Graphite, Sulphides (Pyrite, Pyrrhotite), Titanium minerals along lakeshores, and Vermiculite.
Key Responsibilities
- Exploration Leadership
- Design, implement, and manage exploration programs approved by the board.
- Ensure all technical work complies with industry best practice.
- Oversee geological mapping, sampling, drilling, and data interpretation.
- Resource Modelling
- Develop 3D geological models using industry-standard software (Leapfrog, Surpac).
- Ensure compliance with international reporting standards (JORC, NI 43‑101).
- Operational Support
- Provide geological input for mine planning and grade control.
- Monitor ore quality and advise on beneficiation processes.
- Team Management
- Lead and mentor geologists, technicians, and field staff.
- Foster collaboration with mining engineers, metallurgists, and environmental teams.
- Work closely with contractors and other site personnel to ensure smooth operations and effective communication.
- Data Management
- Ensure all exploration data is archived safely and remains easily accessible for analysis and interpretation.
- Personnel Management
- Monitor, mentor, and manage the performance of all project staff. Arrange training and development opportunities to keep the team motivated and skilled.
- Reporting
- Regularly report progress and results to the Managing Director, both informally and formally through written reports.
- Compliance & Safety
- Uphold environmental regulations and mine safety standards.
- Prepare technical reports for regulatory bodies and stakeholders.
- Work with the Managing Director, administrative team, and finance teams internationally to manage all aspects of the exploration business, ensuring compliance with local laws and corporate policies and procedures.
- Community Engagement
- Collaborate with local communities and stakeholders to ensure the project’s social and environmental responsibilities are met.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Geological Engineering (Master’s preferred).
- Membership in a recognised geological society (e.g., GSSA, AusIMM).
- Minimum 10–15 years in mineral exploration and mining geology.
- Proven track record with diverse deposit types.
- Proficiency in GIS and 3D modelling software.
- Strong knowledge of geochemistry, mineralogy, and structural geology.
- Excellent leadership and communication abilities.
- Strong understanding of economic geology and feasibility studies.
