Job summary

An instructor role is available at the office of the Africa Institute of Emergency Medicine (Pty) Ltd in Sandton, Johannesburg. This is a permanent position that reports to the AIEM Commercial & Operations Manager and is responsible for teaching, administration and clinical work within the AIEM business.

Requirements
  • Current registration with the HPCSA’s Professional Board for Emergency Care Personnel as Advanced Life Support Practitioner (Critical Care Assistant/B Tech EMC / B EMC / Diploma EMC) – (ECT will not be considered for this position) OR current Registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse (PN).
  • Current AHA BLS Instructor Status.
  • Current AHA ACLS Instructor Status.
  • 2 years minimum operational experience as an Advanced Life Support Paramedic / Emergency Care Practitioner / DipEMC OR 2 years minimum experience as a Professional Nurse in an emergency department or intensive care unit.
Advantageous / Preferred
  • Previous recent experience at a training institution presenting postgraduate short courses.
  • Postgraduate Diploma/Masters Degree in Emergency Medicine or Healthcare Education or willing to complete a similar degree within 2 years of appointment.
  • Current AHA ACLS EP Instructor Certification.
  • Current AHA PALS Instructor Certification.
  • Current ITLS Instructor Certification.
  • Current NERS Instructor Certification.
  • Current EMOVA Instructor Certification.
  • A demonstrated area of expertise/special interest within a domain of emergency medicine, emergency care/medicine-related to the context of AIEM training.

** This position includes an element of travel based on work‑life balance and training; the incumbent must be willing to travel outside of Gauteng for training and courses.**

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote, plan, manage and co‑ordinate teaching and development initiatives to realise, through blended learning and teaching practices, the vision of the African Institute of Emergency Medicine/Training and Development Centre.
  • Prepare for and carry out instruction and conduct examinations, as required, on all course programmes presented by AIEM training, including but not limited to AHA and ITLS courses, CPG updates for all levels of training and internally developed courses.
  • Completion of all the necessary pre‑ and post‑course paperwork for courses presented.
  • Assist with the development and presentation of new training materials and courses.
  • Clinical / Practical teaching in the clinical environment within the ERC structures.
  • Assist with learner/student management, mentorship and tutorials.
  • Liaise with various clients, departments and business units, both internally and externally, to develop and implement training and education activities, and support services to improve clinical skills proficiencies and knowledge retention within the clients’ operations.
  • Promote collaborative practices and open engagement between AIEM faculty and its partner institutions.
  • Must be willing to work flexi. and long hours including travelling outside of the greater Gauteng region to present courses as and when the need arises.
  • Assist with marketing and promotion of courses presented through the AIEM Training Centre.
  • Must be willing to work cooperatively within the greater business of AIEM.
  • Assist, drive and/or manage the creation of course content in‑line with AIEM Course Development based on Business Goals.
Basic Terms of Employment
  • Total number of hours of 193 per month to be split between office, clinical and travel schedules dependent upon the requirements of the business.
  • 18 days of leave per annum; 3 days of study leave, and 3 days of family responsibility leave per annum.
  • Commencement of job description.
  • Successful running of employment portfolio and compliance with all job deliverables based on annual key performance indicators reviews.
  • Employee will not be eligible to claim overtime for administrative functions or travel time to and from client training venues but will be reimbursed for any personal vehicle travel and accommodation costs for duties performed not on AIEM training centre premises.
