Job description
🚀 Test Automation Architect 🚀

At Paystone, we believe quality is engineered, not inspected. We’re looking for a Test Automation Architect to define and scale the frameworks, infrastructure, and practices that enable every squad to ship with confidence.

This is a senior, hands‑on engineering role for someone with deep technical expertise (8+ years) who can architect systems, code frameworks, and mentor engineers across teams. You’ll set the technical direction for how Paystone tests at scale, while staying close to the code.

Reporting to: VP, Engineering
Department: Engineering

What You'll Be Doing
Test Architecture & Technical Leadership
  • Architect and implement test automation frameworks, tools, and libraries in TypeScript/JavaScript (Jest, Playwright, etc.) used across engineering squads.
  • Define the overall test strategy and architecture (unit → integration → E2E → performance) to ensure reliability, scalability, and speed.
  • Review system designs and production code with an eye for testability, observability, and maintainability.
  • Debug product and automation code, diving into APIs, logs, and distributed systems.
Quality Engineering & Tooling
  • Embed test automation and quality gates into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, etc.).
  • Drive optimization of test performance, coverage, and reliability; eliminate flaky tests.
  • Introduce new tools and approaches (contract testing, mutation testing, visual regression, etc.) when they meaningfully improve product quality.
Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Partner with product and engineering leaders to ensure testability is designed in from day one.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels: pair programming, workshops, and setting best practices for test automation.
  • Act as a technical authority on test automation and quality engineering across the organization.
Planning & Delivery
  • Scope and prioritize automation initiatives that balance developer velocity with product risk.
  • Provide visibility into test coverage, release readiness, and quality metrics for stakeholders.
  • Ensure environments and data are reproducible, version-controlled, and aligned with production.
What We're Looking For
  • 8+ years of software engineering and test automation experience in SaaS or distributed systems.
  • Proven track record architecting and scaling test automation frameworks in production environments.
  • Deep hands‑on expertise with Jest, Playwright (or similar frameworks) and strong TypeScript/JavaScript coding skills.
  • Experience integrating automated testing into cloud-based CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong grasp of advanced testing strategies: TDD, BDD, contract testing, performance, accessibility.
  • Solid engineering fundamentals: debugging distributed systems, reasoning about complexity and performance.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; comfortable influencing technical direction across teams.
  • Passion for mentorship and building a culture of engineering excellence.

👉 As our Test Automation Architect, you’ll combine hands‑on coding with strategic technical leadership, shaping how Paystone engineers build, test, and deliver high‑quality software at scale.

Let’s raise the bar on reliability — together. 🚀
