Role: Quality Control/Quality Assurance Lead for shipbuilding or heavy manufacturing projects. Responsibilities and qualifications as follows.
Responsibilities
- Plan and implement Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) for steelwork activities.
- Supervise quality control during fabrication and erection (cutting, fitting, welding, alignment, blasting & painting).
- Verify material certificates and ensure compliance with specifications and applicable standards.
- Conduct inspection and verification (dimensional check, welding inspection, NDT coordination).
- Prepare and manage quality documentation (inspection checklist, NCR, CAR, daily/weekly reports).
- Coordinate with Production, Engineering, Planning, Class Surveyor, and Owner representatives regarding quality matters.
- Identify non-conformities and ensure corrective and preventive actions are taken effectively.
- Lead and guide QC inspectors in performing inspection duties.
- Provide training and knowledge sharing for QC team related to inspection procedures and quality standards.
- Ensure all QC activities are carried out in compliance with HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) standards and company safety regulations.
- Promote a strong safety culture by actively monitoring and reporting unsafe acts/conditions during inspection activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in both quality and safety performance.
- Act as the main point of contact for internal and external audits, as well as classification society inspections.
- Provide progress reports and QC performance updates to the Project Manager and Senior Management
Qualifications
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in Quality Control/Quality Assurance within the shipbuilding or heavy manufacturing industry.
- At least 3 years of proven leadership experience in managing a QC team in ship construction or ship repair projects.
- Strong knowledge of international standards related to shipyard operations: IACS, IMO, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and classification society standards (LR, DNV, ABS, BV, etc.).
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Solid understanding of shipbuilding processes: steel cutting, block assembly, outfitting, painting, and commissioning.
- Knowledge of inspection & testing techniques (NDT: UT, RT, MT, PT, VT; as well as pressure tests, alignment checks, and dimensional control).
- Skilled in preparing Quality Plans, ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans), WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and QA/QC documentation.
- Strong ability in root cause analysis and developing Corrective & Preventive Actions (CAPA).
- Familiar with QC instruments and equipment (calibration, certification, handling).
- Proficient in MS Office and QC-related systems (advanced Excel, reporting systems, QMS tools).
- Strong leadership skills in managing multi-disciplinary QC teams (hull, piping, painting, electrical, machinery).
- Ability to coordinate effectively with Production, Planning, HSE, and Project Management departments.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Decisive yet fair in enforcing quality-related decisions.
- Able to perform under tight project schedules and high-pressure environments.
- High level of integrity and commitment to quality and safety standards
Notes
- Must be able to work in shipyard environments, including onboard ships, dry docks, and workshops.
- Willing to work overtime, weekends, or shift work as required.
- Physically capable of climbing, walking, and inspecting vessels in progress.
