Job description
About the Faculty

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest in the UK, bringing together expertise across biological sciences, chemistry, computing, engineering, mathematics, geography, and environmental sciences. The Faculty plays a central role in advancing the University's strategy through cutting-edge research, innovative teaching, and strong partnerships with industry, government, and international collaborators. With a commitment to addressing global challenges – from sustainability and climate resilience to digital transformation and advanced materials – the Faculty delivers real-world impact while preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers to shape the future.

About the Department

The Department of Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University is a rapidly growing centre of excellence, contributing significantly to the University's strategic priorities in research, innovation, and global engagement. With strong industry links and a focus on applied, interdisciplinary research, the department delivers impact through projects ranging from sustainable energy systems to advanced materials and digital manufacturing. Current initiatives include expanding international partnerships, such as the Joint Institute with Hubei University, and investing in new research centres and state-of-the-art teaching facilities. The department plays a vital role in shaping the University's vision of producing highly skilled graduates and driving innovation that supports regional, national, and international challenges.

About the Project

The Joint Institute, formally established in April 2020 as the Manchester Metropolitan Joint Institute, Hubei University, is a strategic partnership between Manchester Metropolitan University and Hubei University. It offers a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Software Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, and Advanced Materials, combining the strengths and expertise of both institutions.

Although the role is based in Manchester, the post holder will undertake two eight-week teaching blocks per academic year at Hubei University, Wuhan. During these teaching periods, the successful candidate will join the academic team at Hubei University, contributing to the delivery of the Joint Institute's programmes and engaging with students in an international education environment.

To support this, the University will provide full orientation and training to facilitate effective teaching and cultural adaptation at the Joint Institute. This post therefore offers an excellent professional development opportunity, enabling the successful candidate to enhance their educational and pedagogical practice both within Manchester Metropolitan and in close collaboration with colleagues at Hubei University. In addition, the role provides valuable experience of transnational education, cross-cultural engagement, and international collaboration.

About the Role & Team

The successful candidate will join the Department of Engineering's academic team, working closely with colleagues including Programme Leaders and other Lecturers teaching on a joint Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme. Day-to-day responsibilities will focus on teaching delivery, student support, assessment, and contributing to curriculum development within the BEng programme. While the post does not involve direct line management, the role requires active collaboration with teaching teams both at Manchester Metropolitan and within the Joint Institute at Hubei University. The post holder will be an integral member of a supportive, international team structure designed to deliver high-quality teaching and an excellent student experience across both institutions.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and delivering high-quality teaching. Your responsibilities will include preparing and leading lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions; supervising student projects and dissertations; designing assessments; and providing academic support and guidance to students. You will contribute to curriculum innovation and continuous improvement, ensuring that teaching remains industry-relevant and aligned with professional standards.

Key Skills & Experiences

An in-depth knowledge and understanding of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is essential for this role. You will be committed to delivering teaching that is engaging, inspiring, intellectually rigorous, and aligned with current developments in the discipline and the expectations of professional bodies. Equally important is the ability to apply initiative, creativity, and sound judgement in both teaching and scholarly activities, ensuring that students benefit from a learning experience that is both academically challenging and professionally relevant. Strong communication skills, adaptability in different teaching contexts, and the capacity to contribute to curriculum development and innovation are key to success in this post.
