Job description

We are seeking a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in our Secure and Forensic Service as part of a passionate, supportive, friendly, enthusiastic team. This exciting opportunity results from service reconfiguration and expansion

Psychiatrists play a crucial role in driving change and influencing service development. We embrace positive transformation and value each other's experiences to shape our services aiming to continuously improve for the benefit of our patients.

We are a teaching Trust with strong links to BSMS and part of Health Educations Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. Higher specialist trainees are allocated to approved posts and trainers recognized by the GMC as Educational Supervisors.

Main duties of the job

You will be an integral part of a well-established multidisciplinary team. Duties would include:

Inpatient care to 7 patients on a male low secure ward at the Hellingly Centre

Assessments of patients for suitability for admission to LSU

Gatekeeping assessments for suitability for secure and forensic service

Liaison with external agencies such as MoJ/police/probation/Courts

Statutory duties under MHA

Forensic Outreach & Liaison Service-Learning Disability and Autism (LD&A)

Assessment and advice for complex LD&A cases by Risk Assessment and Formulation (RAF) approximately 2 referrals per week

Case load (up to 12) complex forensic LD&A community patients.

Occasional assessments of prisoners thought not to require hospital admission whose home area is within the catchment area

Job responsibilities

Inpatient - Elm ward - Male LSUThe main responsibilities include providing inpatient care to a maximum of 7 patients on a male low secure ward at the Hellingly Centre. The post-holder will assess patients referred from various sources including step-down from MSU, PICU, Prison services, General Adult services, CAMHS, and Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) provider collaborative for suitability of admission to a Low Secure Unit. All referrals come through a single point of access via weekly referral meetings. On an average there are 2 referrals per month.

Forensic Outreach & Liaison Service-Learning Disability and Autism (LD&A)The post-holder would provide advice to complex LD&A cases by Risk Assessment and Formulation (RAF) approximately 2 referrals per week and carry a small case load (up to 12) LD&A community patients. They would also provide occasional assessments of prisoners thought not to require hospital admission whose home area is within the catchment area; such assessments arise no more than two or three times per year.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
Transport
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.
Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Ability to work in and lead team
  • Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement.
  • Participated in continuous professional development
  • Participated in research or service evaluation.
  • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes
  • Ability to work in a participatory way so that shared decision making and conversations around formulation/diagnosis and ongoing care are a collaborative endeavour with the people who access our service.
  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
  • Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken
  • Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
  • Has led clinical audits leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients
