Do you thrive in collaborative, creative environments? Are you looking for a challenging role that allows flexible working and work-life balance? If this sounds like you, then we’d love to hear from you.

We are looking for Mechanical Engineers to join our expanding Reactor Operations team, based in the UK. In this role, you will deliver a diverse and challenging range of projects for our clients, with opportunities to work within AtkinsRéalis design teams or directly with our clients by being embedded into their major programmes.

The variety and scale of projects we work on means that there is something for everybody, and we work hard to make sure that all our staff have fulfilling and rewarding careers. Whatever our individual roles, we approach everything we do with a sense of curiosity, care, courage and community.

You will have the opportunity to apply your existing skills and develop new skills across a wide range projects across the full UK nuclear industry. In Reactor Operations, your core work will involve design and substantiation of mechanical equipment to the highest standards of safety, quality, and efficiency, to enable the continued operation and life extension of our UK fleet of nuclear power stations and nuclear-powered submarines. Our team also work closely with our Power New Build business, supporting Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C, and the development of Small Modular Reactors and Fusion Energy reactors, as well as our Decommissioning business, supporting the safe dismantling, processing and packaging of nuclear waste at the UK’s nuclear estate at Sellafield and across the UK’s decommissioning power stations and nuclear-powered submarines.

Your role
  • Delivery of a wide range of mechanical engineering projects.
  • Performing feasibility and optioneering studies to generate design solutions to problems.
  • Development of engineering solutions through the design lifecycle; Concept, Scheme, Detailed Design and Construction.
  • Supporting the development of bids and value propositions.
  • Management of project budgets, schedules, and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Confidently liaising with, presenting to, and influencing stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally, in understanding their issues, goals, and processes and to build strong, lasting relationships.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
About you
  • Degree qualified mechanical engineer, or other relevant qualification.
  • Chartered or incorporated with a relevant professional institute (e.g., IMechE), or approaching application for registration.
  • Experience in the design and/or substantiation of mechanical equipment, which could include mechanical handling systems, machinery, test rigs, or mechanical components.
  • Experience operating engineering software for production of 3D CAD models, drawings, calculations, and Finite Element Analysis models.
  • Experience working within design codes, standards and regulations typical for the engineering industry e.g., ASME, Eurocodes, BS EN13001, RCC-M, machinery directive, HS&E legislation.
  • Experience in hazard / fault identification studies e.g., ERICPD, HAZOP, HAZAN, FMEA.
  • Experience in writing, checking, and reviewing technical reports and documentation e.g., design calculations, basis of design, safety case reports, design reports.
  • You are comfortable using your own judgement when managing uncertainty and technical risk.
  • You are excited when you identify new opportunities, win work and contribute to growth.
  • Previous experience of working in the UK nuclear industry, or another highly regulated industry, would be an advantage.
