Overview

Ashford & St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse - Paediatric ED. The closing date is 12 October 2025.

Are you an enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking nurse who thrives in a busy environment where no two days are the same? If so this post is for you. We are seeking experienced, dynamic, energetic and committed children trained nurses to become our next Band 6 Deputy Sister.

At St Peter's we have a dedicated Paediatric Emergency department which is situated alongside the general A&E Department. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is staffed by a team of paediatricians and paediatric nurses who work together delivering high quality care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide visible, credible professional clinical leadership for the nursing team in Paediatric ED on a shift by shift basis. They will ensure nursing care delivered is high quality, research-based and patient and family focused. The post holder will be a role model for junior team members, supporting and promoting a learning environment. On a daily basis they will lead, manage and facilitate the effective and efficient use of allocated resources and ensure smooth patient flow from paediatric ED through to the ward.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • To be clinically able to undertake and direct high quality research-based clinical nursing care, sharing expertise with the nursing team.
  • Develop and maintain own competence in agreed basic and advanced clinical skills.
  • Demonstrate clinical knowledge/expertise at the level of advanced practice in field relevant to clinical specialty.
  • To have excellent verbal and written communication skills so that professional advice or care guidance and instructions are well understood by patients, their relatives and/or carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To manage clinical situations that may be challenging and distressing for junior staff, ensuring the needs of the child and family are paramount.
  • To ensure effective patient flow through the department, ensuring pathways and processes are in place for safe discharge, transfer or admission.
  • Regularly check patient care documentation to ensure all aspects of care are considered and an appropriate plan is made to meet identified needs.
  • Function as an effective role model in the clinical setting and support the application of breadth and depth of nursing knowledge and skills within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Facilitate the professional development of other nurses working with Clinical Practice Educators; support and mentor junior colleagues.
  • Collaborate with infection control to monitor the ward environment and raise infection control and cleanliness standards.
  • Collaborate with senior medical and nursing teams to ensure clinical governance processes address quality of care.

Managerial

  • Manage the patient pathway within Paediatric ED including admission to the ward.
  • Ensure appropriate patient allocation considering skill mix and patient acuity.
  • Promote staff wellbeing by ensuring breaks are managed to maintain clinical safety.
  • Provide positive, effective leadership and act as a role model. Delegate appropriately and empower staff to problem-solve daily clinical workloads.
  • Support nurses in working collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Adopt appropriate management style in changing circumstances.
  • Undertake annual appraisal for nursing staff with Personal Development Plans and assist with appraisal of other staff with the Paediatric ED Matron.
  • Participate in nursing research and clinical audit as directed; promote clear communication structures within the department.
  • Promote a culture that anticipates and addresses patient concerns before they become complaints.
  • Deputise for the Paediatric ED Matron in their absence and meet regularly to discuss ward issues and developments.
  • Participate in Trust clinical, professional and managerial meetings and committees relevant to the service.

Professional

  • Maintain and develop professional knowledge and expertise to meet revalidation and job requirements.
  • Actively share knowledge and expertise as a clinical leader within the Trust.
  • Delegate appropriate areas of responsibility to enhance practice and development.
  • Reflect as a practitioner and promote reflective practices within the department.
  • Participate in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
  • Contribute to the profession within the Trust, participating in projects, committees and meetings as agreed.
  • Have an annual appraisal with agreed objectives and a Personal Development Plan.
  • Undertake in-house training as appropriate.

Educational

  • Act as a role model to junior nurses and learners rotating to the area.
  • Ensure supervisors, mentors and/or preceptors provide adequate support and supervision.
  • Undertake recognised assessor training and participate in formal assessment of learner nurses.
  • Foster an environment conducive to learning, enquiry and research linked to the Trust's research strategy.

Health, Safety & Security

  • Maintain a clean and safe environment conducive to therapeutic and ethical practice, with accountability for own competence.
  • Promote nursing practice and care delivery in line with evidence and Trust policies/guidelines.
  • Identify potential risks for staff, patients and visitors; take action and adhere to incident reporting procedures.
  • Safely manage medicines in accordance with local and Trust policy and legal requirements.
  • Handle and dispose of body fluids with universal precautions.

Provision of Care to Meet Health and Wellbeing Needs

  • Advocate for patients and families, providing information and directing to relevant support services.
  • Respect dignity, wishes and beliefs; involve patients in shared decision-making and obtain consent for procedures.
  • Ensure treatments prescribed by medical staff are carried out and inform the MDT of changes in condition.
  • Ensure safe and timely transfer of patients in line with ASPH policy.
  • Ensure safe discharge of patients in line with ASPH Discharge Policy.

General responsibilities

  • Duty of care for own health, safety and wellbeing and that of colleagues, patients and visitors; adhere to risk management and clinical governance.
  • Responsible for personal development and contribute to the development of colleagues.
  • Follow ASPH Foundation Trust rules, policies, procedures and professional obligations.
