SpringhillHospice is a 16 bedded adult hospice providing the highest standard ofphysical, psychological and emotional care to our patients with life limitingillnesses and also to their loved ones, in a safe, caring and holisticenvironment.
Where possible,patients are encouraged to maintain independence and to make informed choiceswhilst protecting their privacy and dignity.We offer advice and support from the time of referral throughout the illnessand into the bereavement period.

We are lookingfor an enthusiastic and motivated Staff Nurse, preferably with previousexperience of caring for patients with palliative care needs, to work as partof an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team in the Hospices Inpatient Unit andHospice at Home service.
We encourageall our staff to develop their knowledge and gain new skills in order to enhancethe care of and support given to patients.

SpringhillHospice providesthe following palliative care services to the local adultpopulation who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminalillnesses:
16-bed Inpatientunit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.
Hospice atHome Service - supports people whowant to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptommanagement they need to be able to do so.
DayTherapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4-days-a-week, offering complementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage);creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.
CommunityService - provides specialistpalliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes
A 24-hour PalliativeCare Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.
Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.
CounsellingServices for patients, carers andrelatives, provided by a qualified therapist.
An EducationUnit - an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health andsocial care professionals, with the main focus of training being on theSpringhill Palliative Care Education Passport' (SPCEP) which ensures that corepalliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.
Job responsibilities
Professional
- 1.1 Plan, implement and evaluate patient careusing multidisciplinary approach following the Hospice philosophy, acting asNamed Nurse for designated patients, both on the Hospice inpatient unit and inthe patients own home.
- 1.2 Supervise professional work of otherstaff, where appropriate, and prioritise where necessary.
- 1.3 Deliver skilled, research based,individually planned nursing care to patients.Evaluate and document all care given, as laid down by Hospice and NMCpolicy.
- 1.4 Ensure patients and, where appropriate,relatives/carers are involved in the care planning process and ensure adherenceto the Admissions/Discharge policies.
- 1.5 In accordance with the NMC Standards forAdministration of Medicines and Springhill Hospice Drug Management Policies,undertake drug management procedures, ensuring correct record keeping.
- 1.6 Complete patient documentation inaccordance with Hospice policy and the NMC Standards for Records and RecordKeeping.
- 1.7 Work closely with and liaiseappropriately with the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of care topatients/relatives/carers.
- 1.8 Maintain a safe environment to patients,relatives, visitors and staff in accordance with the Health and Safety at WorkAct.
- 1.9 Within the scope of professional practiceand Hospice policies, perform role expansion duties, following appropriatetraining and assessment of competence.
- 1.10 Ensure that the correct policy for the careand custody of patients property/valuables is adhered to.
- 1.11 Supervise and contribute to the trainingand development needs of junior staff, qualified and unqualified, includingvolunteers and others.
- 1.12 Deliver advice and support within theconstraints of your own professional competency to patients, carers andhealthcare professionals who call the 24 hour palliative care advice line. Advice given will be evidence-based andappropriate training ongoing.
Education
- 2.1 Supervise and contribute to the trainingand development of nursing and care staff and act as mentor to individualnurses on clinical placement.
- 2.2 Maintain a personal and professionalportfolio, providing evidence of self-development and ensure PREP requirementsare fully met.
- 2.3 Participate in individual performancereview and personal development planning.
- 2.4 Attend mandatory training sessions aslaid down by Springhill Hospice and access other appropriate educationaltraining programmes as required.
- 2.5 Participate in clinical andorganisational audit and be actively involved in research activity anddemonstrate the ability to advance palliative care research.
Personnel
- 3.1 Read, understand and comply with allHospice policies and procedures, applying the principles as appropriate torole.
- 3.2 Tobe aware of individual specific responsibilities in respect of the Safeguardingof Vulnerable Adults, in relation to role.
- 3.3 Introduce and support new personnel intheir duties.
- 3.4 Report to Sister and Director of ClinicalServices as appropriate.
- 3.5 Participate in meetings/case conferences.
- 3.6 Ensure your continued support andencouragement to colleagues within the nursing team and wider Hospice team atall times.
- 3.7 Participate in continuing education forpersonal progress and teaching of nursing staff, trained and untrained, andvolunteers.
- 3.8 Ensure that all donations received forthe Hospice are recorded and passed to appropriate personnel, and assist asrequired with fundraising.
- 3.9 On occasion represent the Hospice andreceive donations at outside meetings/functions.
- 3.10 In the absence of senior nursing staff,deal appropriately with enquiries, concerns or complaints from patients,visitors, healthcare professionals or general public.
- 3.11 Maintain requirements of NMC registration.
- 3.12 Undertake any other duties as required anddelegated by senior nursing staff.
- 3.13 Act at all times in a professional andcompetent manner, so enhancing the profession of Nursing and the reputation ofSpringhill Hospice to the general public.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate continuing patient care.
- Good understanding of the audit process and other elements of clinical Governance.
- Extended role skills ie venepuncture, cannulation, IV therapies, male catheterisation.
- Knowledge and experience of audit systems.
Qualifications
- Evidence of continued professional development and willingness to undertake further study in palliative care.
- Certificate/Diploma in palliative care.
- Qualification in assessment and mentorship in clinical practice.
- Teaching qualification (ENB 998 or equivalent).
- Registered nurse (Level 1) with minimum of 1 year post registration experience.
