An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Colorectal surgeon to join the team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust. The post holder will work on the Queen's Hospital Site in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, joining a team of five other lower‑GI surgeons. Interest and experience in pelvic floor disorders would be an advantage.

Key responsibilities include providing general and colorectal surgical services for Staffordshire and surrounding areas and playing a key role in developing these services. Queens Hospital, Burton is also developing robotic surgery, which is currently delivered on the Royal Derby site.

• Co‑operate with general and colorectal consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive service for Staffordshire and the surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department.
• Take responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge, performing clinical duties as agreed in your job plan and delegating appropriately to trainee staff.
• Provide an out‑of‑hours general and colorectal service with consultant colleagues, including on‑call commitments.
• Cover for consultant colleagues’ annual leave and authorised absence, including patient care and supervision of trainee doctors (a minimum of six weeks’ notice is required for all leave requests).
• Professional supervision, training and management of trainee medical staff, including teaching, examination and accreditation duties, and contribution to postgraduate and continuing medical education locally and nationally.
• Participate in medical auditing, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and CPD.
• Involve in research and supervision of trainees in audit or research projects.

• Medically qualified and possess FRCS;
• GMC registration with licence to practice;
• Eligible for entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training;
• Higher degree relevant to surgical practice;
• Training qualification.

• Laparoscopic colorectal surgery experience obtained through a recognised training programme.
• Training and experience in general and particularly colorectal surgery, with a high standard of clinical skill and expertise obtained through a recognised training programme.
• Experience of pelvic floor disorders.

• Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, theatre lists, and booking.
• Experience of audit management.
• Experience of multidisciplinary team coordination and management.
• Ability to manage and lead junior medical staff.

• Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.
• Evidence of delivery of high quality teaching.
• Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
