This is a senior legal leadership role for an experienced Local Authority lawyer who enjoys managing people, advising at a high level and helping services make sound decisions.
You will lead a small in-house legal team delivering advice across a broad range of council activity. The role suits someone who is already supervising or managing lawyers, whether in a contentious or non-contentious setting, and who is open to taking on oversight of Land Charges and Information Governance as part of a wider management brief. You will have overall responsibility for a team of seven, including Senior Legal Officers, Paralegals and specialist officers covering Land Charges and Information Governance. The emphasis here is on legal leadership, judgement and the ability to run a service. Support and development will be available around Information Governance where needed. You will:
- Lead and develop a compact legal team, setting direction, priorities and standards
- Provide clear, practical legal advice to senior officers and services across the council
- Support the Monitoring Officer on governance, risk and decision‑making
- Oversee the delivery of Land Charges and Information Governance functions, with specialist officers in post
- Manage workloads, budgets and the commissioning of external legal support where appropriate
- A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX
- An experienced Local Authority lawyer with a strong public sector background
- Confident leading and supervising lawyers and legal support staff
- Comfortable working with senior stakeholders and elected membersOpen to developing your oversight of Information Governance and Land Charges as part of a broader role
