You’ll act as a key member of the portering team, providing a transport service to meet the needs of the wards and departments and to ensure that medical records, materials and equipment are safely and appropriately transferred around the hospital.

• Transfer patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via walking, wheelchair, stretcher or beds.
• Use of task management system (HIVE) to enable effective management of activity within the portering service, including the use of a two-way radio system.
• Convey blood specimens in a safe manner from wards/departments to the Pathology department.
• Convey patient notes and X‑rays to and from wards/departments.
• Remove deceased bodies from wards/departments to the mortuary safely and dignifiedly, and to assist in viewing in the absence of the mortuary technician.
• Accept coroner’s cases into the mortuary in the absence of the mortuary technician.
• Convey deceased patients from ambulance to the mortuary.
• Replace medical gases where necessary on wards/departments for the patient requirements within the contracted hours.
• Assist in the transfer of seriously injured patients from ambulance/helicopter to the A&E department.
• Use the designated blood tracking system to provide a more traceable structure for the benefit of both the patient and the department.
• Help the movement of medical supplies.
• Assist in transporting, where specifically requested, patients from wards to theatres and vice versa after hours, between 20:00–08:00.
