Urology Lead Nurse

Main duties of the job

The Lead Nurse works with a high degree of independence and autonomy to provide care and treatment to patients within the specialty of Urology with some cross cover with Uro-oncology.

The Lead Nurse utilises advanced clinical judgment and decision making to manage complex clinical situations, formulate appropriate care plans and follow up as required throughout the patient's pathway.

The Lead Nurse is educated or working towards a Masters Level qualification and has ideally completed relevant practice competencies such as non-medical prescribing, physical assessment and advanced communication skills or working towards. Additionally, with specific reference to Urology be able to undertake or be willing to gain competency in flexible cystoscopy, prostate biopsy and urodynamic studies.

The role is proactive in pioneering and further advancing nursing/midwifery in response to challenging healthcare needs and advances in practice. The post is intended to provide improved outcomes for patients by improving clinical outcomes and the quality of the service.

You will also manage a team of urology nurse specialist.

Please note: Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

1. Use advanced expertise and clinical skills to accurately assess individual needs of urology patients and to manage their care appropriately informed by evidence based practice or expert opinion

2. Obtain a medical, surgical and urological history in a systematic manner, including physical, social, emotional, psychological and environmental factors

3. Undertake appropriate urological physical examination as per protocols/guidelines

4. Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory tests within agreed Trust and Directorate guidelines

5. Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings on history and physical examination and relates this to possible diagnosis/ differential diagnoses

6. To make appropriate diagnoses and identify, plan, assess, implement and evaluate patient care and needs both independently and in collaboration with other members of the multi-professional team

7. To undertake specialist procedures including flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsy when appropriately trained and assessed within agreed Trust and Directorate guidelines/protocols

8. To prescribe treatment as a Non-Medical Prescriber or utilising Patient Group Directions, as appropriate within Trust guidelines/protocols

9. To participate in the Clinical Governance agenda as set by the Directorate and the Trust

1. To independently manage a caseload of Urological patients within protocols/guidelines as agreed within the Trust and Directorate guidelines

1. To accurately and concisely document all care provided

1. To provide expert clinical advice to patients and colleagues

1. To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice

1. To maintain a high profile in the clinical area acting as a role model for other health care professionals

1. To assist in establishing, implementing and monitoring Trust/directorate guidelines, policies and protocols

Professional and Personal Responsibilities:

1. To act as a role model and promote excellence in nursing practice as well as promoting professional and clinical nursing skills within the Directorate/Trust

2. To be responsible for working within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all Trust and Directorate guidelines, with the ability to practice independently and with freedom to act as appropriate

3. To maintain and respect patient confidentiality in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Trust and Directorate Policies

4. To work within both local and national clinical guidelines

5. To maintain an expert level of competence and continue with own personal and professional development through relevant professional and academic study

6. To maintain accurate and up to date medical and nursing records

7. To act in an advisory/collaborative role with all members of the multi-professional team and contribute to project work, research, clinical audit and developments within the Surgical/Urology Division

8. To undertake Personal Development Review (PDR) with the Divisional Nurse for Planned Care, and to critically reflect on own performance through clinical supervision and mentoring

9. To establish and maintain a mentor relationship with a named medical consultant.

1. To lead and support the nursing team and junior doctors to complete competency based training programmes appropriate to their level

2. To promote excellence in nursing practice by teaching and developing staff within the directorate and to organise and participate in educational events both locally and nationally.

3. To become involved in the development and facilitation of the Directorates education strategy.

4. 4. To initiate and co-ordinate teaching and assessing in clinical practice and to facilitate the ongoing development of competencies

5. To act as an educator, practice developer and leadership role model for other members of staff

6. To advocate improved health through relevant health promotion, advice and education and by encouraging patient participation in their care

Research/Audit Responsibilities:

1. Critically evaluates research and audit findings and incorporates evidenced based practice into care of patients.

2. Responsible for policy/protocol development and implementation within Urology and the Trust

3. To initiate and undertake audit as appropriate either individually or as part of the multi-disciplinary team

4. To generate questions for research arising out of practice and to collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team in order to investigate these questions

5. To attend relevant departmental and Directorate meetings relating to clinical practice and clinical governance

1. To provide specialist support, advice, share knowledge and expertise and act as a resource both within the Directorate and other agencies

2. To establish and maintain links with other agencies outside the Directorate with relevance to the speciality
