A leading engineering firm in the United Kingdom seeks a proactive Laboratory Technician to assist in research on gas-phase reactions. This role combines experimental chemistry, programming, and hands-on engineering, providing a dynamic work environment focused on innovative problem-solving. Candidates should have a technical qualification or equivalent experience, with skills in mechanical components and electronics. Opportunities include working with advanced systems to develop experimental prototypes.
TGRC is proud to be partnering with a UK-based applied science and advanced engineering company at the forefront of industrial innovation. Leveraging a multi-disciplinary approach across the automotive, aerospace, and chemical sectors, the firm is driving sustainability by enabling manufacturers to integrate carbon-derived silica into products ranging from tyres to touchscreens- while significantly cutting emissions.
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join the team on a research project investigating the kinetics of gas-phase reactions. This is a highly interdisciplinary position, combining experimental chemistry, programming, and hands-on engineering in the design, construction, and testing of laboratory equipment. The role offers a unique opportunity for creative problem-solving within a dynamic research environment.
Assist in the design, assembly, and maintenance of experimental setups for gas-phase reaction studies.
Operate and optimise chemical processes, including building, developing, and fine-tuning systems.
Carry out practical laboratory tasks such as cleaning, repairing, and adjusting reactor test beds.
Perform mechanical assembly work, including tool handling, pipework cutting, and basic electronics integration.
Conduct system testing and run experimental chemical processes under research team guidance.
Work with gas handling systems, including installation, modification, and troubleshooting of lines, valves, fittings, and tubing.
Undertake basic electronic assembly for custom sensors and data acquisition systems.
Program, operate, and maintain control systems for laboratory equipment.
Support data collection and conduct preliminary analysis, including developing custom scripts in Python.
Operate and maintain gas chromatographs to ensure accurate data acquisition.
Collaborate with researchers and engineers to translate experimental concepts into functional prototypes.
Maintain accurate documentation of experimental procedures, configurations, and maintenance activities.
Contribute to iterative improvements in experimental design and resolve technical challenges alongside the wider team.
Technical qualification or equivalent hands-on experience in chemistry, chemical engineering, electronics, physics, or a related discipline.
Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, inquisitive mindset.
Experience with mechanical components such as pipes, valves, and pressure fittings.
Proficiency in soldering and a solid understanding of basic electronics.
Python programming skills, particularly for hardware integration and data acquisition.
Experience with control devices such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or similar microcontrollers.
Familiarity with gas chromatograph operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of physical chemistry and experience in wet chemistry laboratory environments.
Previous commercial or industry experience
