A leading research laboratory in the UK is seeking an experienced Scientist for a permanent position focusing on ultra-precise optical measurements. The role involves developing applications of interferometry, collaborating with scientists, and has opportunities for publishing work in high-impact journals. Essential qualifications include a PhD in a photonics-related subject and experience in laboratory electronics and coding. Our world‑leading department are seeking an experienced Scientist to develop some of the most innovative uses of ultra‑precise measurements over optical fibre links. This permanent, full‑time position comes with a generous salary and benefits package.
You’ll enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists and Engineers to conceive, design, build state‑of‑the‑art ultra‑stable setups to perform innovative tests on optical fibre systems and links. You’ll enjoy sharing responsibility for the development of research on applications of ultra‑stable interferometry for a range of scientific and societal applications; such as
NPL has pioneered sensing techniques for the using the existing undersea network of optical fibres and is looking at expanding the knowledge and applications of these techniques. This role provides exciting opportunities to publish your work in high‑impact academic journals and present it at prestigious international conferences, contributing to a rapidly growing field of research.
Reporting to a Senior Scientist, you’ll enjoy developing applications of ultra‑stable interferometry - from the dissemination of ultra‑stable and ultra‑accurate signals, to detecting earthquakes with seafloor optical cables.
To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills, experience, and qualifications :
