We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineering Technical Lead to join the IT team at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you?

What we do

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it's so much more than this. We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire's water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region's health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. The IT function is a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

We're looking for a hands‑on technical lead to help shape data engineering at the forefront of the water industry. You'll set engineering standards, embed best practices, and work closely with engineers, data scientists, and architects to solve real‑world challenges. You'll bring deep expertise in building clean, reliable data systems, strong leadership, and a collaborative mindset. Experience with Databricks and performant SQL is essential, and knowledge of the utilities sector is a bonus. If you're passionate about mentoring others, driving technical excellence, and making a real impact, we'd love to hear from you.

Where you fit in
As our Data Engineering Technical Lead you will:
  • Influence data engineering strategy and improve end‑to‑end development lifecycle.
  • Evaluate and implement modern data tools and platforms.
  • Drive automation, performance, and cost‑efficiency in data systems.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy and security standards.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, architects, and business leaders.
  • Translate business needs into technical solutions and data models.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high‑performing data engineering team.
  • Design robust, scalable data pipelines aligned with strategic goals.
  • Champion data quality, governance, and reusable standards.
  • Work with technology partners to enhance services, manage risk, and ensure value for money.
What skills & qualifications you will need
  • Proven experience delivering complex data pipelines using Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and other cloud platforms.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, and cloud‑native tools like APIM, Azure Functions, and Synapse.
  • Hands‑on experience with DBT for modular, testable SQL in a Lakehouse architecture.
  • Proficient in Power BI for building interactive dashboards and visualising insights.
  • Skilled in Databricks for collaborative data engineering, machine learning, and analytics.
  • Familiarity with the Medallion data design pattern.
  • Solid understanding of data modelling and experience leading delivery strategies.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with a focus on data and code quality assurance.

Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it's important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life.

Do we sound like your cup of tea?
