Our technology powers the UK’s real-time payments, settlements and direct debit systems, as well as networks of over 55,000 ATMs. We process over 90 percent of salaries, more than 70 percent of household bills and almost all state benefits.

As a Data Centre Infrastructure Apprentice you will work in world class data centres that run critical national infrastructure for the UK finance industry. You will work alongside Data Centre Infrastructure Engineers to ensure IT equipment and cabling is installed and maintained to allow critical services to run reliably.

Key Responsibilities and duties

  • Cabling Installation and decommissioning: Installing new racks and cabling systems (copper Cat 6 and Multimode fibre optic) according to specifications and industry standards. Decommissioning of redundant cabling systems and racks.
  • Cable Management: Ensuring proper cable routing, organization, and termination to maintain a tidy and efficient data centre environment.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: Identifying and resolving issues with cabling infrastructure, including network connectivity problems.
  • Testing and Documentation: Conducting tests to ensure the quality and functionality of cabling systems and maintaining accurate documentation of the cabling infrastructure.
  • Equipment Installation and decommissioning: Assisting with the installation and configuration of network equipment, including servers, switches, and other hardware. Decommissioning equipment when it is no longer in use.

  • Collaboration: Working with other Data Centre Engineers, contractors, and Network Engineers to ensure the smooth operation of the data centre.
  • Following Procedures: Adhering to safety regulations, industry standards, and company-specific procedures.

Learning Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge: To succeed in this role, previous experience is not required, however it is desirable if you have already started or completed some relevant engineering or structured data cabling studies. What’s most important is that you have a desire to develop a successful career within Data Centre Infrastructure Engineering.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: The ability to assess and evaluate issues to enable you to diagnose and resolve problems related to cabling and network connectivity.
  • Physical Dexterity: Have a passion for hands on engineering work and be comfortable working with hand and power tools, performing physical tasks, and working in confined spaces. As this is a physical role the Apprentice must also be comfortable with manual handling tasks, working at height and long periods of being on their feet.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensure accuracy in cable installation, updating records and testing.
  • Communication Skills: Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with team members, project teams and data centre staff.
  • Safety Awareness: Willing to prioritise safety in all tasks and work to best practice safety standards. You will be required to attend Health and Safety related training courses on an ongoing basis.
