Purpose of the role

This exciting role in the Streaming team will lead on the creation and delivery of innovative live and on demand content and projects in the newsroom and the field.

The role has a focus on attracting underserved audiences to BBC News on iPlayer and our digital platforms through content that adds value beyond breaking and daily news. This role will also work closely with key partners across the BBC including Nations, Local and the News AI team.

Our live streams and video on demand content run on iPlayer in the UK. Streams also run on the News Channel, and globally on BBC News live pages – and as audience viewing for our content grows, so is the team.

In the past few months, a new live stream presentation area for has launched, and the team have produced a range of innovative live and on demand content. It's an exciting time to be part of a new way of delivering and consuming news.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

  • Be highly focussed on attracting underserved audiences to BBC News Streaming content on digital platforms, with a particular focus on iPlayer – and to deliver this by identifying relevant news stories and events that can be covered as live streams, in an original, creative and innovative manner
  • To work closely with colleagues from different teams across News on both small short-term projects and larger, more complex coverage plans. This could range from commissioning, planning and delivering substantial multi-source live coverage such as our recent 10-hour stream building up to Oasis’ first reunion gig – or working in a small team to deliver streaming coverage of a smaller story.
  • Assist with the delivery and implementation of technical and innovation developments and tools relating to live streaming and on demand content, such as introducing AI into workflows.
  • On occasion, to cover for the Assistant Editors in the Streaming Live and/or Video On Demand team.

Essential
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE – KEY CRITERIA

  • Thrive in a live output setting, being at home in both the control room and on location – with a track record of planning and producing successful live news coverage
  • Have experience of making recorded news content, including strong demonstrable knowledge of production and storytelling techniques.
  • Have deep and demonstrable experience of being a team player and working collaboratively with colleagues across a variety of different sized teams to deliver high quality output.
  • Have a thorough understanding of how audiences consume live and on demand video on streaming and digital platforms; in particular, demonstrating a deep understanding of content that will attract underserved audiences to iPlayer
  • Possess advanced technical skills – these might include shooting and editing - and to have advanced knowledge of different methods of live broadcasting
  • To have an interest in and knowledge of AI and other technological developments and how they can be used in the production of news content
  • Evidence of using analytics to help inform decision making
