An international research facility in Grenoble, France is seeking a technician in the Radio Frequency group to engineer systems for a particle accelerator. Responsibilities include designing electronic boards and maintaining RF systems. Ideal candidates will have a technical degree in electronics and at least 2 years of experience. The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

As a technician in the Radio Frequency group, you will work on the 2.998 GHz system consisting of high-power RF modulators with klystrons that feed the accelerating sections of the LINAC (Linear Accelerator). You will also work on the Injection/Extraction system, which is composed of pulsed power supplies and magnets, which is part of the injector in the ESRF accelerator complex.

You will contribute to the maintenance and upgrading of the system, including the design and implementation of new low-level RF, analogue and digital electronics boards. You will also actively participate in finalising the Linac refurbishment program. Some activities will be related to the preparation works for the new injector test bench at 5.7 GHz.

Your tasks will include:

  • Designing and implementing analogue and digital boards, including their assembly into racks
  • Follow-up and maintenance tasks
  • Participating in the operation of the RF system and RF standby.

As a member of the Accelerator and Source Division, you will be required to contribute up to 15% of your time to the operation of the accelerator complex on shift work for service to the Users.

Expected profile

  • A technical degree in electronics (BTS, DUT, Techniker, or equivalent) with at least 120 ECTS credits
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in:
    • Electronic circuit design
    • Electrical measurements
    • AD/DA conversion
  • Solid skills in KiCad
  • Knowledge of RF techniques and/or PLC programming is a plus
  • A team player with strong communication skills, comfortable working in an international scientific environment
  • Good command of English (our working language at the ESRF)
