SlaterFamilyVisiting Scholar

Max Bell School of Public Policy

Faculty of Arts, McGill University

The Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University invites applications for the Slater Family Scholar. The position is open to scholars who conduct policy-oriented research into Canada-U.S. relations, including its political, trade and economic, defence and security, and energy/environmental dimensions. It may be awarded to a professor on sabbatical leave, a postdoctoral student, or an individual outside the academic community whose writing, research and analytical endeavours are making a significant contribution to the study and/or management of the Canada-U.S. relationship.

This position, with a start date of September 2026 or later, is for a one-year term (with the possibility of renewal) aimed at strengthening and supporting the School’s focus on Canada-US relations through research, writing, teaching and participation in events and conferences. The successful candidate will also enhance the School’s engagement with policy experts in Canada and the United States on issues related to the bilateral relationship. The School’s partnership with the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., including the launch of a Second Century Commission examining the future of the Canada-US relationship, will be a particular focus. The salary associated with the position will be determined through consideration of the candidate’s qualifications and proposed level of engagement with the School.

The successful candidate will be expected to continue their policy-related research on Canada-U.S. issues while contributing to the broader life of the Max Bell School, including engaging with the student cohort and participating in other activities and events. The successful candidate will be expected to be physically present at the School on average one to two days a week during academic semesters.

Applicants must upload a curriculum vitae and a letter of intent summarizing their proposed activities and objectives while at the School. The names and contact information of at least two referees must also be provided.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed until January 15, 2026.

Candidates are encouraged to signal any leave that affected productivity, or that may have had an effect on their career path. This information will be considered to ensure the equitable assessment of the candidate’s record.

McGill implements an employment equity program and encourages members of designated equity groups to self-identify. It further seeks to ensure the equitable treatment and full inclusion of persons with disabilities by striving for the implementation of universal design principles transversally, across all facets of the University community, and through accommodation policies and procedures.
