Reporting to the Radio Section Captain within Toronto Fire Service’s Technology Division, the Unified Communications Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of Toronto Fire Service emergency voice and data communication systems and associated services such as NG911. The role requires network and system expertise with a broad knowledge of unified communications, networking, servers and telecommunications.

The primary functions associated with the role include, but are not limited to, the following core services:

Major Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy enterprise LAN/WAN networks, including routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, load balancing, and QoS for voice and data traffic.
  • Implement and manage VoIP and other unified communication platforms (Avaya, Cisco), networks (PBX (Private Branch Exchange), and network protocols (SIP).
  • Administration of servers, gateways, network devices and related systems to ensure high availability and redundancy.
  • Support network communication system issues involving triaging issues, performing root cause analysis, and implementing remediation for system failures.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams when planning and deploying secure, scalable, and resilient network solutions.
  • Perform regular maintenance, install software upgrades, manage hardware and software remediations.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call support rotation for urgent network and communication system incidents.

  • Function as an integral member of the Toronto Fire Service emergency response team to deliver and support Division-specific goals of emergency response and preparedness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to the following:

Must possess:

  • Post‑secondary degree or diploma in the field of Telecommunications, Computer Science or an approved equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Considerable experience in network engineering (LAN/WAN, routing, switching, firewalls, gateways, QoS, and network monitoring).
  • Considerable experience with VoIP, SIP, PBX and unified communications systems.
  • Possess a Driver’s License, Class ‘G’ or better, valid in the Province of Ontario and be able to maintain the same.

Must also possess:

  • Working knowledge of Windows Server, Linux, TCP/IP networking, and network troubleshooting.
  • Able to work a 24‑hour On‑Call shift on a rotation basis, including weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience in leading and documenting technical projects and communicating with management and external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to customer service, performance quality and continuous improvement.
  • Well‑developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Working with critical infrastructure and public safety systems both independently with minimum supervision, as well as in a diverse team setting.
  • Positively interact with others within a diverse work environment.
  • Ability to work with competing demands, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Be physically able to lift, carry, move heavy equipment, climb ladders and manoeuvre in small spaces.

Note:

  • Must provide a Criminal Record Check obtained from a police service in Ontario, to the satisfaction of Fire Services.
  • Psychometric testing may be required.
  • Pass in‑house entry‑level TFS exam may be required.

Assets:

  • Possess one or more industry‑recognized certifications such as Cisco Certification (CCNP or higher) or CompTIA (Network+, Security+).
  • Working knowledge of communication linking systems and Public Safety Communications.
