Job description
About the Role

Grade Level (for internal use): 11

Title: Senior Analyst – S&P Global Ratings

S&P Global Ratings is one of the world's leading providers of independent credit risk research and benchmarks. Within S&P Global Ratings, North America Insurance is an important sector of the capital markets as our credit analysis supports key insurers who provide insurance protection and serves as a growth driver for many areas of the economy. If you are interested in helping to facilitate this growth while challenging yourself in a fast‑paced environment, this is the right position for you. You will join a professional team of analysts that maintains a strong culture of analytical and service excellence in a supportive, globally‑minded, and collegial environment.

As a Senior Analyst on the team, you will primarily be responsible for conducting comprehensive credit analysis in assigning life/health insurance financial strength and debt ratings, as well as collaborating with analytical colleagues in financial services sectors across the U.S. & Canada. As part of your role, you will meet with issuers, assess historical and projected data, and compile this information into a thorough committee presentation and effective written analysis. You may also participate in moderately complex analytical and financing‑specific situations, assist in resolving client needs, participate in investor calls with more senior analysts, and contribute to research for publications or special projects. As your career progresses, you may have the opportunity to present at conferences, support and write opinion pieces, or speak with the media.

The Senior Analyst undertakes rigorous analytical work and is proficient in conducting research and fundamental credit analysis, analyzing financial statements, building financial models and forecasts, and writing analytical reports on rated insurance entities. The successful candidate works effectively both in a team and individually, possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills, is client‑focused, and demonstrates solid presentation skills in front of internal and external audiences. We offer a supportive and flexible work environment within a team of about 15 analysts (per sector) with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We work in a hybrid environment with 2 days in the office and 3 days remote.

Responsibilities and Impact
  • Serve as the primary analyst for assigned issuers, preparing well‑supported rating recommendations for rating committees with clear rating reports supporting our credit opinions
  • Serve as an active, vocal voting member of rating committees, which deliberate rating outcomes and review materials prior to publication
  • Publish timely and insightful credit reports as well as contribute to relevant research pieces
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of ratings criteria and financial statement analysis, while staying informed on relevant news and issues affecting credit quality in the industry and broader market
  • Provide analytical support to team members, fostering a collaborative environment
  • Connect your day‑to‑day analytical work with broader team priorities and strategic objectives
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders to gather information, present findings, and address inquiries in a professional manner
  • Apply solutions to complex analytical issues while taking an end‑to‑end view of credit assessment processes
  • Take initiative to identify potential credit risks and suggest process improvements to enhance analytical quality
  • Deliver high‑quality analytical work consistently while meeting critical deadlines
  • Identify and resolve analytical challenges using data‑driven approaches and creative problem‑solving
  • All employees are required to work from the office a minimum of 2 days per week
  • We require all candidates who reach the final stage of our interview process to attend at least one in‑person interview, which is ordinarily at your nearest S&P Global Ratings office. This must be completed before we can proceed to an offer
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, Mathematics, or related analytical field; MBA, CPA, or CFA preferred
  • More than 3 years of relevant work experience with financial statement analysis, accounting concepts and financial modeling, preferably with experience in corporate credit analysis
  • Strong client‑facing skills with ability to communicate complex analytical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Ability to think independently and critically with strong integrity, analytical curiosity, problem‑solving, and research skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) for internal and external stakeholder interactions
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated quantitative analysis capabilities
  • Ability to accurately interpret financial data and appropriately apply analytical criteria to generate key insights and conclusions
  • Collaborative team player with ability to work independently and willingness to support team initiatives
  • Proactive and organized with excellent time‑management skills and ability to prioritize multiple competing deadlines
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting and capital markets, with knowledge of credit rating methodologies preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and aptitude for learning proprietary analytical software and databases
