Your day to day life
We are looking for a Microbiology Technician / Technicien(ne) en microbiologie at 7150 Frederick Banting, Suite 101, Montreal, QC H4S 2A1, CAN. Your mission will be to:
Main activities
- Read plates and tubes to determine the number of organisms in the sample.
- Record findings on a worksheet for verification.
- Write identification onto plates so the client and sample number can be tracked.
- Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process being performed.
- Pour the agar into plates or tubes to begin the growth process.
- Prepare the sample for analysis by recording, weighing and blending.
- Collect plates and place them in the incubator for the specified time and temperature.
- Prepare media and broth for use in pathogen testing as required.
- Sterilize materials needed for analysis; autoclave plates before discarding.
- Perform food poisoning, pH and other analysis tests on samples when requested by the client.
- Ensure that media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence.
- Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) required to complete job responsibilities.
- Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.
- Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
- Perform necessary housekeeping duties promptly, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized.
- Participate in the cleaning schedule and maintain retain samples as required.
- Adhere to all safety policies.
- Support laboratory management in implementing, maintaining and improving the management system.
- Perform other related tasks as needed.

Objectif: Le titulaire du poste prépare les échantillons en vue de l'analyse et tient à jour la documentation du processus afin de faciliter la traçabilité des procédures d'analyse.
Activités principales:
- Préparer l’échantillon pour l’analyse par l’enregistrement, la pesée, et l'homogénéisation.
- Inscrire l’identification sur les plaques ou tubes afin de pouvoir suivre le numéro du client et celui de l’échantillon.
- Pipetter les dilutions d’échantillon dans des tubes ou plaques selon le processus d’analyse effectué.
- Verser la gélose dans les plaques ou tubes pour démarrer le processus de croissance.
- Récupérer les plaques et les placer dans l’incubateur pendant la durée et à la température spécifiées.
- Préparer les géloses et les bouillons pour les tests d’agents pathogènes, selon les besoins.
- S’assurer que les milieux et le matériel sont prêts pour la séquence de tests suivante.
- Maintenir à jour les connaissances du système de gestion de l’information de laboratoire (LIMS), nécessaires à l’exercice des responsabilités du poste.
- Vérifier l’équipement et le matériel nécessaires à l’analyse.
- Effectuer la lecture des plaques et tubes, selon les besoins, afin de déterminer le nombre d’organismes présents dans l’échantillon.
- Soutenir le processus qualité et d’amélioration continue de l’entreprise.
- Effectuer les tâches d’entretien ménager nécessaires dans les délais, en maintenant les zones de travail et l’équipement propres et désinfectés.
- Participer au calendrier de nettoyage; maintenir et conserver les échantillons selon les besoins.
- Respecter toutes les politiques de sécurité.
- Soutenir la direction du laboratoire dans la mise en œuvre, la maintenance et l’amélioration du système de gestion.
- Effectuer d’autres tâches connexes selon les besoins.
Your profile
Required education/qualifications and professional background: Associates degree or equivalent work experience and 1+ year of relevant work; or, Bachelor’s degree required. The incumbent must have basic knowledge of microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain accurate results. Basic knowledge of personal computers is useful for entering testing data and results. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills are useful to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time.
Required skills: Analytical skills are essential to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of the microorganism. General knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System is required. Physical dexterity is required for manipulating samples.
Work Environment
The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals and materials will occur. Safety equipment (gloves, laboratory coat and glasses) may need to be worn depending on the testing process. The incumbent may use the autoclave daily. Continuous lifting of analysis materials up to 50 lbs may be required. The incumbent can expect extended time spent standing and should be able to detect slight variations in color shades.
Pay: $21 CAD per hour
