Job Summary

The Personal Support Worker provides personal support services to clients and families within the framework of VON policies, procedures, and standards. The PSW collaborates with members of the health care team in meeting the needs of clients to attain an optimal level of independence and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

1. Observes and evaluates the client's or family's home, personal situation and care plan to determine if any changes are required.
2. Contributes to the development of the personal support care plan under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
3. Implements changes to the care plan under the guidance of the Manager for safety and financial reasons.
4. Reports any changes in the client's or family's personal support needs to the supervisor.
5. Performs personal support tasks reflecting the needs of the client and family, including light cleaning, meal preparation, and shopping.
6. Provides personal care as directed, including assistance in mobility and personal hygiene.
7. Provides simple bedside care under the direction of a nurse.
8. Provides respite care to clients as required.
9. Supports clients' families by providing childcare as needed.
10. Organizes daily activities and priorities under the direction of the Manager.
11. Completes daily call checks and other forms as required.
12. Assesses the client's communication patterns.
13. Communicates with health team members regarding clients' needs.
14. Functions in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and VON policies.
15. Other duties as assigned.

Education, Designations And Experience

1. High school diploma.
2. Secondary school education is preferred.
3. CCA Certification is required in Nova Scotia.
4. Must have a certificate in Home Support Worker, Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
5. Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate.
6. Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.

3. Good assessment skills.
4. Awareness of community resources.
5. Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently.
6. Able to take direction well.
7. Ability to adjust to different social and economic environments.
8. Capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.

Other

1. Must have access to a personal vehicle and possess a current driver's license and proof of insurance.
2. A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required.
3. A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
4. Available to work flexible hours.
5. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required.
