Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication to delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Emergency department at the Fort St. John Hospital.

Reporting to the Unit Manager Emergency/Ambulatory Care, the staff nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care and nursing practice activities of patients presenting in the Emergency Department. Also provides nursing care, assistance, and relief to all nursing areas including ICU, Maternity, Med/Surg, and Ambulatory Care within the framework of quality management and in accordance with the Fort St. John Hospital & Health Centre mission statement. The role is defined by the needs of the hospital, a select patient/family population, agency expectations, and the goals for professional nursing practice.

Northern Health Regional Emergency Training Program Details: The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence-informed online curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care at a novice level.

1. There are 6 training positions available for 2025/2026.
2. Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required.
3. Successful candidates may be required to complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position.
4. Learners should expect to make a 4-6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning.
5. Additional study time outside scheduled hours will be required to successfully complete the program.
6. Must have completed Heart and Stroke BLS in the last 6 months.
7. Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
8. Prior experience on an acute care ward (e.g., medical/surgical) is preferred.
9. Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation.
10. Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP.
11. Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
12. Upon successful completion, Northern Health requires an 18-month return of service in a relevant nursing position.
13. Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If none are qualified, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants with training provided.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00

Fort St. John Hospital and Health Centre has 44 acute care beds and 124 residential beds, equipped to handle 22,000 ER visits per year. Highlights include:

• Endoscopy suite, 2 state-of-the-art operating rooms, plus a procedure room

Qualifications:

• Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN.
• Skill certifications: A.C.L.S., CPR, Neonatal Resuscitation, IV therapy, Blood Glucose Monitoring, Ventilator, and basic Cardiac Monitoring.
• Three (3) years' recent acute care experience involving intensive care, obstetrics, emergency, or equivalent training and experience.
