This position is responsible for providing customer-oriented support and maintenance of systems in Microbiology & Immunology. The incumbent will upkeep desktop systems administration providing hardware and software support and will support the audio-visual services for department events and user meetings. They will coordinate IT information from various research labs and units, establish good management and procedures for handling sensitive user and research data and train staff on how to use new technologies or follow procedures.
This position reports to the Systems Administrator and supports the delivery of IT services to the department and research groups. Works independently and jointly within a team of IT technical staff to provide services to 250 faculty, staff, research trainees in a heterogeneous environment. Collaborates with faculty, research trainees, and staff to solve problems and provide solutions. Interacts directly with other University technology professionals as required.
Decisions and actions will have a direct impact on how efficiently and effectively departmental applications will perform and function. Errors in judgment, poor development, or failure to act could have a detrimental effect on these applications, result in data loss or exposure of personal information and could significantly impact the educational and research mission of the department and damage UBC's reputation. Poor quality of work will result in systems with usability issues that will lead to user dissatisfaction and frustration. Work will involve sensitive data and it is expected to follow all UBC Information Security Standards (ISS), Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and university policies while exercising good judgment, diplomacy, and tact in all interactions.
The position works independently under the supervision of the Systems Administrator of Microbiology & Immunology. Work is reviewed in terms of completeness, accuracy and timeliness.
