Job Description:
This position reports to the Manager, Fleet and will coordinate all technical aspects of AltaLink's fleet of approximately 350 vehicles (passenger, production, trailers, and off-road vehicles). Key accountabilities for this position include vehicle maintenance, acquisition and disposal, monitoring of all aspects of fleet performance including safety, utilization and fuel efficiency and ensuring adoption of fleet management best practices. The position will act as a work lead for the Heavy Duty Mechanics and will interact with many areas across AltaLink stakeholders including Operations/Projects, Procurement, Customer Service and all AltaLink employees who use company vehicles.
Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day leadership and work coordination to the Heavy Duty Mechanics team. Including accountability for the acceptance and completion of work assigned to the team
- Promote and ensure safe work practices and conditions for the work team employees and contractors
- Address inventory issues, support vacation coverage and accountabilities including timesheets, logbooks, incident reporting, training, and fleet software/data management
- Assess ability and provide recommendations to the Manager with respect to Capability Development needs of employees
- Support Manager with training and development plans for employees including coaching and mentorship
- Drive leadership in Hazard and near miss reporting and perform regular safety leadership observations
- Ensure record keeping and procedure feedback meets Technical Data and Document Management principles and requirements
- Coordinate vehicle maintenance and repair work with internal and external repair facilities to optimize fleet availability and performance.
- Plan the procurement, delivery, acceptance, and disposal of fleet assets.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure appropriate vehicle specifications and availability.
- Oversee fleet and driver compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements.
- Administer fleet telematics program and leverage technology wherever possible to optimize and monitor fleet performance e.g., telematics
- Monitor vehicle equipment recall notices and alerts
- Responsible for the Fleet operating and capital budgets.
- Review fleet related invoices and ensure correct coding
- Maintain supplier and vendor relationships
- Ensure timely adoption of fleet management best practices through collaboration with industry groups such as Canadian Utility Fleet Council and other utilities including BHE companies as appropriate
- Generate and provide regular reporting to monitor overall fleet performance including fleet size, utilization, fuel efficiency, safety, operating and capital expenses.
- Provide and implement recommendations to improve fleet performance in terms of sizing, utilization, safety, and fuel efficiency (environmental performance).
- Review and enhance fleet maintenance model and processes.
- Monitor regulatory reporting to ensure compliance to all requirements e.g., licensing, inspections, hours of service etc
Requirements
Qualifications:
- A related Technical Diploma or Certification (e.g., Heavy Equipment Technician) from a recognized institution
- Minimum 7 years' experience in fleet management including vehicle maintenance, fleet planning and vehicle technologies including telematics. Minimum one year experience in a leadership role
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities
- Demonstrated ability to plan, allocate and review work as well as coordinate multiple work groups
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including effective communication, conflict resolution, performance coaching and mentoring.
- Knowledge on Alberta Transportation regulations including driver qualifications and vehicle inspections and operation.
- Experience with utility vehicles would be beneficial.
- Eligible for Fleet Safety Officer designation would be an asset.
- Ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization
- Working knowledge of SAP and all MS Office applications. Proficient with fleet management software and Excel.
- Very strong analytical capabilities.
- Effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes
- A self-starter who is able to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a small team and expected to engage with and support Fleet's internal customers.
- Ability for regular travel to AltaLink work locations with overnight stays
- Proven track record of good performance and attendance
