Descripción del empleo

We are looking for the visionaries, the change-makers, and the self-starters who are seeking more from their career. Change begins with the small decisions we make, each day, to support each other, and strive to create inspiring, incredible educational experiences for all students, no matter where they are, or how they learn. In choosing a career with Yorkville University, you will have the opportunity to push boundaries, flex your creativity, and inspire positive change for so many people.

Our core values put the student experience at the center of what we do, reflecting who we are, and aspire to be. If you want to shine a light on academic excellence, be empowered to make an impact on the transformation of the Canadian post-secondary education landscape, and work collaboratively beyond levels, join us.

Who we need

Reporting to the University Librarian, we are hiring a remote part-time Copyright Librarian. As our new Copyright Librarian, you will be the primary advocate, educator, and resource for copyright management at Yorkville University and the Toronto Film School. You will develop and promote a comprehensive understanding of Canadian copyright law, ensuring compliance and best practices across our private, for-profit institution. In this role, you will work closely with faculty, students, and administrative teams to support course material selection, scholarly publishing, repository management, and open-access educational resources. You will collaborate with the Resource Management Librarian and other key stakeholders to integrate copyright guidance into academic and research activities.

This is a part-time, remote role, working 20 hours per week during a standard Monday to Friday work week with scheduling flexibility.

What’s in it for you

Impact. You will set the standard for copyright compliance at Yorkville University and Toronto Film School, ensuring faculty and students understand their rights and responsibilities. You will develop FAQs, guides, and resources while creating a structured approach to triaging copyright questions, making a lasting impact on course development and research integrity.

Engage with diverse academic disciplines. From film production through counselling psychology, you will support faculty and students across a range of academic programs and credentials. Your expertise will be instrumental in textbook selection, consortia licensing, open-access publishing, and accessibility initiatives, offering a dynamic and intellectually engaging environment.

Autonomy and influence. As the first Copyright Librarian in this position, you will help to define the role, shape policies specific to a private, for-profit institution, and build a sustainable framework for copyright and publishing support. With the university’s growing research focus, your expertise will guide scholarly communications, bibliometric analysis, and research dissemination.

As our new Copyright Librarian, you will:
  • Lead copyright education and compliance. You will serve as the primary liaison for all copyright-related inquiries, providing expert guidance to faculty, students, and staff at Yorkville University and the Toronto Film School. You will respond to copyright-related questions via email, phone, and video platforms (Teams, Zoom) and manage the ASK YU/TFS service request system.
  • Develop educational resources. You will create tutorials, library guides, and FAQs to enhance copyright awareness, including maintaining a copyright LibGuide and developing online learning materials. You will plan, promote, and conduct virtual workshops on copyright compliance, APA citation, plagiarism prevention, and open-access licensing.
  • Support resource integration. You will collaborate with the Resource Management Librarian to ensure copyright compliance in course materials and participate in course development kick-off meetings. You will provide high-quality service and essential information to stakeholders across campus as they navigate copyright, licensing, and publishing issues related to teaching and research.
  • Participate in student success initiatives. You will contribute to university-wide programs, including online library orientations across all programs, and work with peer tutors, mental health resources, and academic support teams.
  • Monitor regulations and trends. You will stay informed on legislative updates, scholarly publishing standards, research platforms, and copyright issues in higher education. You will advise faculty on reputable publication options and help them avoid predatory journals.
  • Enhance scholarly communication services. You will provide consultation on consortia licensing, repository management, and open-education resources, ensuring faculty and students have access to legally compliant research tools.
  • Support our culture of equity and inclusion. You will contribute to a positive academic environment, supporting diversity, accessibility, and student well-being.
You have:
  • The passion. You approach your work with genuine curiosity and a creative, innovative mindset. You love helping others navigate complex copyright, research, and resource issues. You are committed to ongoing learning, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • The education and experience. You have a Master’s in Library and Information Science (ALA-accredited). You have experience navigating, creating processes for, and educating others on copyright issues, open-access publishing, and scholarly communications within an academic library setting. Additional education in Canadian copyright law or legal studies is an asset. You adhere to a service-first philosophy, emphasizing patience and care for student well-being.
  • The technical and research skills. You have copyright law, academic publishing, and digital resource management expertise. You are familiar with the American Psychological Association (APA) citation style. You can organize workflow and manage multiple projects. You have in-depth knowledge of best practices in information literacy instruction. You are comfortable with library and educational software such as Brightspace, LibGuides, EBSCO Discovery, Zotero, and Microsoft 365. You are proficient in videoconferencing tools (Teams, Zoom, etc.) for online orientation.
  • The interpersonal skills. You have exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You can explain copyright and related technical topics in accessible ways and have experience delivering presentations, workshops, and research support for diverse audiences. You can build working relationships with cross-functional, internal, and external business partners, positioning yourself as a trusted advisor. You share our commitment to diversity and inclusion, working with users of all ages and from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
Why work at Yorkville University and Toronto Film School?
  • An atmosphere that successfully blends an entrepreneurial culture with education. We value innovation and continuously look towards expanding our programming, working with the latest research, tools and solutions. As a private school with government approval of our offerings, we have the opportunity to do more, stay current and be future-forward.
  • The chance to accelerate your career and disrupt education by responding to the needs you see and purposefully challenging the status quo. Everything we do here is about delighting and engaging our employees - and ultimately our students- from mentorship to teaching, from creative outlets to analytical ones.
  • A place where all individuals feel welcomed in the academic and workplace environments and can bring their authentic selves to the educational and work spheres. We celebrate the full range of human diversity, and we acknowledge that equal access to opportunities and services may require the removal of barriers that equity-seeking communities experience in trying to obtain this access.
  • The opportunity to grow with access to free courses, certifications and programs - right up to our Masters' offerings.
  • An appreciation for the insights and skills you bring to work with a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits, including a wide breadth of wellness services and a work-life balance.

This is an opportunity to discuss how your experience aligns with the needs of the team and for you to ask further questions about the role, team, and culture.
