Manulife Investment Management (“MIM”) is a global wealth and asset management business with assets under management and administration of approximately US$900 billion as of December 31, 2024. Investment strategies include fixed-income, specialized equity, multi-asset solutions, and private markets. The Private Markets group has investment teams managing real estate debt, real estate equity, timber, agriculture, infrastructure equity, private equity and private credit on behalf of institutional clients and Manulife’s balance sheet. Investment teams operate in a boutique environment, empowered to make investment decisions in line with their singular philosophy and their clients’ long-term objectives.

Within Private Markets, the MIM Indirect Infrastructure Equity Investment Team (the “Team”) consists of investment professionals whose work is focused on institutional funds and co-investments globally across sectors including renewable energy, power and utilities, transportation, and digital infrastructure. The Team oversees the portfolio of the Manulife general account with ~ C$12 billion of assets under management.

The Team is seeking candidates for the position of Associate Director. The candidate, based in Toronto, will focus on global infrastructure equity fund investments and co-investments. The candidate will participate in the sourcing and underwriting of new investment opportunities as well as monitoring investments over their holding period.

Position Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in sourcing new investment opportunities by developing relationships with placement agents, infrastructure equity firms and other deal relevant sources. The candidate will also be responsible for managing some existing relationships with external fund managers.

  • Take a leadership role in the completion of due diligence of new infrastructure equity fund commitments and co-investments. The candidate will be expected to develop their own diligence plan including advanced financial modelling of various investment outcomes, identification of key risks and areas of focus. In addition, the candidate is responsible for ensuring the analysis is appropriately documented.

  • Lead and contribute to the preparation of investment memos, often in collaboration with junior members of the investment team, summarizing findings from the analysis noted above. The successful candidate will be responsible for presenting the investment thesis to the Investment Committee.

  • Review and negotiate legal documentation with oversight of other senior members of the team and legal counsel.

  • Take an active role in monitoring investments; This includes identifying important developments and evolving risks, representing the organization on Limited Partner Advisory Committees and portfolio company boards of directors, maintaining an active dialogue with sponsors and investment partners, and reviewing quarterly financial reports provided by sponsors and portfolio companies.

  • Contribute to the timely and accurate reporting of portfolio and group related reporting activities. This can include assisting in the aggregation and reporting of portfolio level data for senior management and valuation of portfolio assets. The candidate may also be expected to make presentations to internal clients.

  • Take overall responsibility for the oversight of Associates’ and Analysts’ work product and provide mentoring of these team members.
