Position Description

The McGill University Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute are currently inviting applications for a full‑time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical). This will be a three‑year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The McGill University Department of Psychiatry’s mission is to support patients and their loved ones to move from mental illness to health through cutting‑edge integrated care, supported by research and academic training for the next generation. Results of a recent survey of personnel in the department highlighted a collective pride in the excellence of our clinical work, a high degree of satisfaction with teamwork, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a workplace climate that promotes resilience and wellbeing.

Our department has a rich history of scientific innovation with sustained expertise in psychotherapy, substance abuse research, psychoneuroendocrinology, psychoimmunology, genetics, epigenetics, advanced brain imaging, and computational and digital psychiatry. It remains a global leader in integrating cutting‑edge science with clinical practice to train future psychiatric researchers and clinicians. We are proud to host a respectful, multi‑disciplinary, and inclusive work setting in its multiple areas of activity, which includes the training of a diverse group of students from medicine, psychology, occupational therapy, nursing, and social work.

The Douglas Mental Health University Institute is part of the Montréal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre, whose mission is to offer cutting‑edge care and advance and share knowledge in mental health. The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute—a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will work on an inpatient unit dedicated to mood disorders and at the day hospital and at the Module for Evaluation and Liaison (MEL), which carries out psychiatric assessments at the request of general practitioners in order to provide diagnostic details and recommendations.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to residents and medical students, participate in hospital and administrative activities, and pursue scholarly activities.

The incumbent will have a broad range of clinical abilities and aptitudes for working in interdisciplinary teams within the Psychiatry program. They will be expected to have a strong academic track record demonstrated by experience in education and/or an active research dossier.

In addition to patient care activities, the successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

All McGill faculty members are also expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD, and hold or be eligible for, licensure as a psychiatrist in the province of Quebec;
  • Have completed advanced Psychiatry training (fellowship/graduate studies);
  • Possess an advanced capacity to engage in all aspects of a university‑affiliated psychiatry department (i.e., clinical, education and/or research);
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
Assets
  • Clinician‑scientists with MD/PhD (or equivalent research‑intensive training) are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Interest and relevant experience in administration and medical leadership will be considered an asset.
