SUMMARY
About the Role – Assistant Director of Engineering
As the Assistant Director of Engineering at Park Hyatt Toronto, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring the seamless operation and maintenance of our luxury property. In alignment with Hyatt’s World of Care commitment and Forbes 5-Star service standards, you will assist in overseeing the physical integrity of the hotel, focusing on safety, preventative maintenance, sustainability, and guest satisfaction.
You will support the Director of Engineering in managing capital projects, budgets, and vendor partnerships, while leading the Engineering team with integrity, accountability, and a commitment to excellence. This role requires a hands-on approach to daily operations, as well as strategic thinking and a guest-centric mindset to uphold the highest luxury hospitality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
· Assist in the daily oversight of the Engineering team, ensuring coverage and productivity across all shifts.
· Coordinate and supervise repairs, maintenance, and preventive programs for all building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire life safety.
· Monitor work orders, ensuring timely resolution with minimal guest disruption.
· Act as the department head in the absence of the Director of Engineering.
· Safety, Compliance & Sustainability
· Ensure adherence to all building codes, fire safety regulations, and local/provincial laws.
· Lead and train the Emergency Response and Fire Safety Teams.
· Promote a culture of safety and energy conservation, supporting Hyatt’s environmental goals and World of Care initiatives.
Vendor and Project Management
· Engage and coordinate with contractors for repairs, upgrades, and renovation projects.
· Review vendor proposals and service agreements for accuracy, scope, and value.
· Monitor contractor performance on-site to ensure compliance with safety standards and quality expectations.
Budgeting & Resource Management
· Assist in developing and managing department budgets, capital expenditures, and monthly reporting.
· Maintain proper procurement procedures for equipment, inventory, and services in compliance with hotel standards.
· Identify and recommend cost-saving measures and sustainable solutions.
Team Development & Culture
· Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of new team members.
· Lead by example, fostering a culture of respect, excellence, and continuous learning.
· Provide coaching, performance feedback, and participate in the annual appraisal process.
· Conduct regular departmental meetings to ensure alignment and communication.
· Minimum 5 years of experience in hotel engineering or facility management, including 2 years in a supervisory capacity; luxury hotel experience strongly preferred.
· Technical, trade, or vocational certification in building systems or engineering-related field preferred.
· In-depth knowledge of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, fire/life safety, and preventative maintenance protocols.
· Familiarity with energy management systems and sustainability practices.
· Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and motivate a team.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office and work order systems; ability to read technical drawings.
· Strong organizational and communication skills, with a commitment to safety, service, and excellence.
