Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance is responsible for the overall financial leadership and management of the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre. This role ensures the sound financial health of the organization by overseeing cash flow, managing client funds disbursement, fulfilling government reporting obligations, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. The Director of Finance will lead the development of financial policies, procedures, and systems that support strategic objectives, transparency, and operational efficiency.
As a key member of the senior management team, the Director of Finance will work closely with program leads to manage budgets for all Innovation Centre programs, prepare accurate and timely financial statements for Board meetings, lead forecasting and budgeting processes, and ensure the integrity of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll. The Director of Finance will also play a strategic role in resource allocation, risk management, and the long-term financial sustainability of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee and manage the Innovation Centre’s full financial cycle, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and cash flow.
Manage disbursement of client funds and ensure proper documentation and accountability for all transactions.
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Lead the organization’s annual budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with program managers.
Prepare and submit all government financial reports and funding claims, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and funding agreements.
Develop and maintain financial policies, internal controls, and procedures to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
Provide financial analysis, modeling, and advice to guide strategic and operational decision-making.
Monitor program budgets and provide financial reporting to program leads to support effective program delivery.
Coordinate and oversee the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors.
Lead the planning, development, and delivery of financial workshops and training sessions for clients and the business community.
Manage banking relationships and optimize cash management strategies.
Ensure compliance with all CRA requirements, non-profit financial standards, and funder guidelines.
Present financial updates and reports at Board and committee meetings.
Work directly with clients to address their financial needs, from budgeting and cash flow management to preparing for funding or investment.
Train and support staff on budget management and financial procedures as required.
Participate as an active member of the Innovation Centre team, assisting with events, workshops, and activities that support the organization’s mission.
Skills and Qualifications
Successful completion of a postsecondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
A recognized accounting designation (CPA, CMA, CGA, or CA) preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a senior financial management role, preferably in a non-profit, public sector, or complex multi-program environment.
Demonstrated experience managing budgets, cash flow, forecasting, and the preparation of audited financial statements.
Strong understanding of government reporting requirements, non-profit accounting standards, and funder compliance.
Experience with grant and contribution agreements, including financial reporting and claim preparation.
Proven track record of implementing and maintaining financial systems, policies, and internal controls.
Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and advanced skills in MS Excel.
Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities effectively.
High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism in handling sensitive information.
Working Conditions
Regular full-time position, in-office, Monday to Friday.
Ability to work outside regular business hours as required for deadlines and Board meetings.
Occasional travel may be required.
Office located at Confederation College, Thunder Bay Campus.
Salary Range
$85,000 – $90,000
