Band 6 Senior Theatre Scrub Practitioner (SFA) – part‑time at The London Clinic, 20 Devonshire Place, London.

Job responsibilities

Job Title: Band 6 Senior Theatre Scrub Practitioner (SFA) – Part‑time

Location: The London Clinic, 20 Devonshire Place, London

Hours: 16 hours per week – with on‑call participation

Salary: Competitive, in line with experience

  • Scrub and assist across a wide range of surgical specialities, ensuring consistently high standards of care.
  • Act as a Surgical First Assistant, providing direct consultant support during procedures.
  • Coordinate operating lists and ensure optimal use of equipment, resources and staff.
  • Mentor junior colleagues, promoting continuous learning and clinical excellence.
  • Uphold theatre policies and maintain strict compliance with infection prevention and patient safety standards.
Skills and Experience
  • Registered Practitioner with NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Qualified Surgical First Assistant (SFA) with proven scrub experience.
  • Confident and competent across multiple surgical specialities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Committed to continuous professional development and collaborative teamworking.

The London Clinic is one of the UK’s largest private hospitals, established in 1932 and located in the heart of Marylebone. Our Theatre Department is one of the most advanced in the country, with 10 state‑of‑the‑art theatres delivering a broad range of specialities including oncology, orthopaedics, robotics, neurosurgery, plastics, urology and complex general surgery. The Recovery Unit plays a vital role in this service, ensuring every patient receives safe, seamless and personalised care following their procedure.

Main duties of the job
  • Assume the surgical first assistant role, providing the highest standard of consultant support.
  • Prepare surgical equipment, drugs and consumables for a wide range of operative procedures.
  • Coordinate the use of supplies and equipment during an operating list, ensuring appropriate and safe use.
  • Conduct mandatory patient checks against the supporting documentation at appropriate times during the patient’s peri‑operative period.
  • Assist in the delivery of patient care.
  • Contribute to quality improvement.
  • Develop and enhance the skills and knowledge of others and self.
  • Promote best evidence‑based practice within own scope of practice.
  • Apply legislation, policies and procedures correctly.
  • Respect the patient’s dignity, privacy, wishes and beliefs.
  • Participate in HR activities.
  • Assist in the enhancement, development, introduction of services and initiatives.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Registered Practitioner with NMC or HPC registration.
  • Degree in nursing studies or healthcare‑related subject (UK equivalent).
  • Surgical First Assistant Qualification.
Experience
  • 3 years post‑graduate experience in operating theatres, with particular experience in area of key speciality.
  • Experience of change management.
  • Thorough understanding of contemporary nursing and operating department issues.
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Evidence of innovation in practice.
